Alexander glanced at her with a hint of amusement in his eyes, as though he found the whole act rather ridiculous.
He probably thought pretending in front of her was just as distasteful as she did.
Danielle didn't care what he thought. She stood up, took Niki's hand, and walked out without another word.
She had already called a cab to pick them up—there was no way she'd share a ride with Alexander if she could help it.
Raffy watched Danielle leave, baffled. "Did Mom wake up on the wrong side of the bed or something? Who ticked her off?"
Alexander withdrew his gaze, his face unreadable. He said nothing.
"Dad, after school today, can I ask Miss Millie to come over and help me with my homework? I want to try what Niki did yesterday," Raffy asked, hopeful.
Alexander set down his napkin, his manner calm and unhurried. "You can call her and see if she's available."
—
After dropping Niki off at preschool, Danielle called Conrad to check on the progress of her appeal.
His voice was steady, unhurried. "The paperwork's been submitted. Once the case is filed, you'll get a notification."
"If you want, you can check the case status on the official website."
Hearing that, Danielle finally felt a weight lift from her chest. Even if the appeal process was a hassle, as long as the outcome was good, she didn't mind the trouble.
She thanked Conrad and asked about his attorney fees—something she'd forgotten to discuss before, and he hadn't brought up either.
Someone with Conrad's reputation could pick and choose cases, and his fees reflected that.
But he offered Danielle a friends' rate: ten grand.
Payable after the case closed.
Danielle let out a slow breath when she heard the price.
Since she'd moved out of the Davidson house, Alexander hadn't sent her any money. Not that she would've accepted it if he had.
Most of her savings had gone to help her mother get back on her feet; she'd kept just enough—about five thousand—for rent and living expenses. Life was going to be a lot tighter than before.
Now, faced with this hefty legal bill, she felt the pressure all over again.
—
So this was what Alexander meant when he said he'd "give her the brooch," only for it to mysteriously disappear?
He'd even used it as an excuse to drag her back to the old house just to embarrass her at that party.
How cold could he be? Was messing with her some kind of game?
And to think she'd actually believed he would keep his promises. What had she been hoping for? What kind of compromise was she waiting on?
Kirsten noticed the color drain from Danielle's face and frowned. "Dani, are you okay?"
Danielle forced a deep breath, trying to swallow the knot of anger in her chest. She handed the phone back to Kirsten. "I'm fine."
"Fine? That woman is obviously picking a fight with you." Kirsten pressed, "You should call him and get to the bottom of this."
There was no way Danielle was letting this go.
She dropped her gaze, took out her phone, found Alexander's number, and stepped out into the hallway.
The call rang once—then was abruptly cut off.

Where is Chapter 545 - 554? I thought there'll be 9-10 chapters per update....
I knew it! He’s in love with her but he thinks she loves his brother!...
Oh poor Bianca... regrets, regrets :)...
This is it! Revenge. Way to go Dani....
OMG! Chapters 451-462 had me on edge. I wish we could also read Alexander's POV. I swear I want to punch him and Millie. This story is kind of a push and pull. The main character will win some, then lose some. Hope the writer gives Danielle a big win....
I hope not a lot of important dialogues get cut out, especially between Danielle and Alexander. But I can't complain, really. Thank you again for the updates....
I'm already in chapter 432 ATM and I have the impression that the story is so slow. Daniele remains in the dark, her reputation is low and inexistent, her accomplishment and professional abilities are stiĺl hidden, her enemies are taking the joy in humiliatihg her. No evolution in the plot? Please don't stay long in this, readers might lose interest in the long run....
Please update...
The last chapter was too short. More pls. Thank you....
Lovin' this. More more pls!...
