His gaze flickered back to Millie, a barely perceptible, cold smirk ghosting across his eyes.
“Well then, I wish you both the best of luck.”
Gian’s eyes narrowed slightly.
Alexander was shielding Millie, to a remarkable degree.
His reply carried a subtle note of mockery. “The professor only takes on local students—he has no interest in those obsessed with foreign credentials.”
Ever since Millie had returned home, she’d paraded her dual PhDs from overseas at every opportunity.
But these days, the country’s technology sector was hardly lagging behind anyone else.
Even without the personal grudges, Mr. Hawthorne would never have chosen her.
The old guard of scientists tended to look down on people like her the most.
Gian spoke up. “Professor, let’s go. There’s something I’d like to discuss.”
Mr. Hawthorne waved them off, a gesture of farewell.
Alexander inclined his head politely. “Take care, Mr. Hawthorne.”
Mr. Hawthorne shot Alexander a brief look, let out a sharp, dismissive huff, and turned on his heel.
Millie pressed her lips together, her expression darkening.
Just like that, she’d been branded as someone with an unhealthy obsession for the West.
Alexander glanced at her, offering a gentle, understated smile. “Upset?”
Millie said nothing.
Upset was putting it mildly. With her qualifications, she could outshine any of Mr. Hawthorne’s current students.
Yet, he’d rejected her over and over again.
Stubborn old man.
Alexander gave a quiet laugh. “Mr. Hawthorne’s getting on in years. He’s developed a bias against people who studied abroad. Can’t really blame him.”
He paused. “Next time, should I introduce you to someone else?”
What was she thinking, marrying a man like that? And now, in public, that same husband was introducing another woman? She’d been let down so badly—it made his chest tighten with silent anger.
“Dani,” Gian called, “join us for dinner with the professor tonight.”
Danielle snapped out of her thoughts, lifting her head to meet her mentor’s gaze.
There was a hint of gentle reproach in her eyes.
“Professor,” she said, rising to her feet and greeting him with respectful formality.
Mr. Hawthorne put on a show of sternness, wagging a finger at her, almost grinding out the words, “You!”
Across the room, Liam happened to catch the scene.
Mr. Hawthorne’s expression was filled with undisguised irritation and disappointment.
Liam gave a derisive laugh. In his opinion, Danielle had nothing going for her but good looks—no wonder she was disliked wherever she went.
How did she even have the nerve to show up here?
He turned away, chuckling as he addressed Millie and Alexander nearby. “Look at that. Mr. Hawthorne’s absolutely furious with Danielle. I bet he’s got issues with Gian wanting to bring her into Ninesky.”

Where is Chapter 545 - 554? I thought there'll be 9-10 chapters per update....
I knew it! He’s in love with her but he thinks she loves his brother!...
Oh poor Bianca... regrets, regrets :)...
This is it! Revenge. Way to go Dani....
OMG! Chapters 451-462 had me on edge. I wish we could also read Alexander's POV. I swear I want to punch him and Millie. This story is kind of a push and pull. The main character will win some, then lose some. Hope the writer gives Danielle a big win....
I hope not a lot of important dialogues get cut out, especially between Danielle and Alexander. But I can't complain, really. Thank you again for the updates....
I'm already in chapter 432 ATM and I have the impression that the story is so slow. Daniele remains in the dark, her reputation is low and inexistent, her accomplishment and professional abilities are stiĺl hidden, her enemies are taking the joy in humiliatihg her. No evolution in the plot? Please don't stay long in this, readers might lose interest in the long run....
Please update...
The last chapter was too short. More pls. Thank you....
Lovin' this. More more pls!...
