Neil’s expression turned darker following Silvia’s questions.
He held her shoulders and stared into her eyes as he seriously answered, “That’s not it. Aside from repaying her favor, I also wanted to see how you would react. I was waiting for you to be jealous. I would have immediately drawn the line with Ada the second you objected.”
Silvia flung his hands away, and her gaze gradually turned cold. “Don’t you think you’re supposed to draw the line with her? Why do I have to say something first? Why can’t you have the sense to do it?”
“Because I wasn’t sure if you still liked me,” Neil said softly.
Silvia burst out laughing and mocked him, “If I didn’t care about you, why would I go off to Ferona to save you? If I didn’t care, would I side with you when you were accused of sexually harassing Elaine York? If I didn’t care, would I quietly tolerate your meetups with Ada over the past half a year?!”
“...I’m sorry.”
She stood up and looked down at him as she said, “If we have to keep testing each other, it’s time to consider whether we should still be together.”
Neil panicked, and he reached out to grab her hand, but she avoided him.
“I’ll be quite busy with work over the next few days. I’m going to be staying over at the company.” Silvia then went upstairs to pack her luggage.
When Neil saw her leaving with her luggage, he suddenly got up to block her way.
“Sil, let’s talk about this. I don’t want us to give each other the silent treatment.”
“I’m not giving you the silent treatment. I just need a few days to cool down,” she said indifferently.
“You don’t have to do that in the company. You can do that here.”
“We like each other right now, and that’s why we’re together. If our feelings for each other grow stronger, we might get married again. But if we lose feelings for each other, I’ll leave. I’ll see where fate leads us, and I won’t be adamant about staying with you forever.”
If she was, she might have a hard time getting over Neil if things did not work out. Hence, she would not allow herself to get caught up in that situation again.
“So, you don’t mind me meeting Ada because you’re mentally prepared to break up with me anytime?”
Silvia looked resigned. “You’ve misunderstood me. It’s not that I don’t mind. I’m just not the same person I used to be, so I don’t want to argue about this. We’ve gone through too many things together, and I believe you already know what we should and shouldn’t do.”
Neil remained silent for a long time before he released her hand and said, “For some reason, I feel like that distance between us is greater than before after hearing what you said.”
His heart also ached even more.
