Chapter 42
I stood where I was with the documents in my hand as I looked at Benson in bewilderment.” Mr. Layton, is there anything else I can do for you?”
He gazed at me and asked with a grin. “Max, I heard that you bought a present for Camille?”
Before I could explain, he went on and offered some comforting words. “I have to admit that I spoiled her, but when it comes to gifts, it’s the thought that counts. The gift’s value doesn’t matter, as long as you bought it with her in mind.
“Don’t let her words get to you.‘
I shook my head and explained
That’s not it, Mr. Laytön.”
Yet, Benson didn’t give me the chance to finish talking. Instead, he gave me a look as if he understood my situation, chuckled, and waved.
“You don’t have to explain to me why, dved.
goes on between you two. Just make sure you get along
with her and look for me if you need help with anything.”
I was speechless. Benson had completely misinterpreted the whole situation. The look on his face told me as much.
That said, I decided not to correct him. I couldn’t be bothered to waste my time explaining the entire story.
My contract was coming to an end anyway. Once it did, I would have nothing to do with the Laytons anymore. They could read the situation however they wanted to.
Once I was back in my office, I stored my compiled files in different categories. Once I was done labeling the folders with content, date, and time, I removed every password and turned off the computer.

I had taken away everything that belonged to me in the office. In two more hours, I would be completely free of this place.
Turning around, I looked at the metaphorical prison that subjected me to humiliation and mistreatment for three long years. I slowly closed the office door and left without hesitation.
After I got into my car, I carefully put the gift box into the glove compartment. It would lie in. wait until I gave it to Sophia with my own hands tonight.
That was when my phone rang sharply. I pulled out my phone and gazed at it. As expected, it was Camille.
“Where the hell are you, Max? What’s taking you so long? You have ten minutes to show up in front of me. Otherwise, you can forget about coming at all!”
After Camille lashed out at me and shouted everything she wanted to say, she hung up the

phone.
I tucked my phone away and drove to the hotel where her birthday party was being held. After I parked my car, I saw Kieran among the crowd. He was holding a bouquet of fresh flowers.
Apparently, he still hadn’t completely given up on Camille. He still intended to gain favor with her and become her husband, but Benson would never allow that to happen.
The Zane family was facing bankruptcy. Of course, Benson knew what games they were playing.
