I turned away from him, unwilling to let him see the flicker of uncertainty on my face. The penthouse windows reflected my silhouette against the night sky, a dark shape framed by city lights.

The lock clicked behind us. I whipped around, already knowing who it was before I saw her. Only one person besides Varian had access to my private elevator.

Selene’s eyes flashed with anger. “No one asked for your opinion, Beta.”

“You’re pushing boundaries tonight, Selené,” I warned, pouring myself a glass of water.

She moved closer, her hand brushing my arm. “I’m just trying to understand what’s going on with you.”

“Varian,” I said without looking at him, “we’ll finish our discussion tomorrow.”

He nodded, understanding the dismissal. “The results should be ready in two days, Alpha.”

Varian looked to me, waiting for permission to elaborate, I gave a subtle shake of my head.

“Good night, Alpha,” he said instead, heading for the door.

Selene watched him leave, irritation clear in the tight line of her mouth. The moment the door closed, she turned on me.

“What was that about? What results is he talking about?”

I brushed past her, suddenly exhausted. “Nothing that concerns you.”

“Everything about you concerns me,” she insisted, trailing after me. “I’m your future Luna, remember? Your mate.”

I stopped abruptly, causing her to nearly crash into my back. “Are you? I don’t remember marking you, Selene.”

She flinched as if I’d struck her. “You’re just tired,” she said quickly, voice tight. “You don’t mean that.”

“What I mean,” I continued, turning to face her, “is that you assume too much. You act like my Luna when you’re not.”
