Rejected Luna Returns with Secret Twins (Lysandra) novel Chapter 106

Chapter 106

I turned away from him, unwilling to let him see the flicker of uncertainty on my face. The penthouse windows reflected my silhouette against the night sky, a dark shape framed by city lights.

The lock clicked behind us. I whipped around, already knowing who it was before I saw her. Only one person besides Varian had access to my private elevator.

Selene stepped into the apartment, her red dress replaced by something tighter and shorter. Her eyes darted between us.

Tristan, she purred, moving toward me. What report are you two discussing?

I didn’t answer, keeping my expression carefully blank as I watched her.

Varian caught my eye, reading the subtle shift in my demeanor. He straightened his posture, positioning himself between

  1. us.

This is Pack internal business,he said, his tone professionally detached.

Selene’s smile faltered. She turned to Varian, eyes narrowing. Why do you treat me this way? That night you even forced me back to this pack against my will.

I was following Alpha orders,Varian replied evenly.

She spun toward me, cheeks flushed with indignation. And I’m going to be your Luna. Pack members should start acknowledging that, shouldn’t they?

I raised an eyebrow but offered no confirmation, no denialjust silence. Her confidence wavered visibly in the face of my nonresponse.

I’m tired,I finally said, moving past her toward the kitchen. It’s been a long day.

But I just got here, she protested, following me. We haven’t seen each other since the yacht party.

Maybe that’s a good thing,Varian muttered, just loud enough for her to hear.

Selene’s eyes flashed with anger. No one asked for your opinion, Beta.

Her deliberate emphasis on his rankmeant to diminish himonly highlighted her own insecurity. The dynamic felt strange, watching this woman who’d been in my life for years interact with my Beta. Had she always spoken to him this way? Had I simply never noticed, or never cared enough to notice?

You’re pushing boundaries tonight, Selené,I warned, pouring myself a glass of water.

She moved closer, her hand brushing my arm. I’m just trying to understand what’s going on with you.

Varian,I said without looking at him, we’ll finish our discussion tomorrow.

He nodded, understanding the dismissal. The results should be ready in two days, Alpha.

Results? Selene perked up. What results?

Chapter 106

Varian looked to me, waiting for permission to elaborate, I gave a subtle shake of my head.

Good night, Alpha,he said instead, heading for the door.

Selene watched him leave, irritation clear in the tight line of her mouth. The moment the door closed, she turned on me.

What was that about? What results is he talking about?

I brushed past her, suddenly exhausted. Nothing that concerns you.

Everything about you concerns me,she insisted, trailing after me. I’m your future Luna, remember? Your mate.

I stopped abruptly, causing her to nearly crash into my back. Are you? I don’t remember marking you, Selene.

She flinched as if I’d struck her. You’re just tired, she said quickly, voice tight. You don’t mean that.

What I mean,I continued, turning to face her, is that you assume too much. You act like my Luna when you’re not.

Her eyes filled with tears. Do you know how humiliating it is? Standing beside you at events while everyone whispers about Alpha Tristan’s girlfriend? Never publicly acknowledged, never properly introduced as your future Luna?*

If you can’t accept where things stand now, then leave. The words came out harsher than intended, but I couldn’t bring

myself to care. I won’t stop you.

Her tears stopped instantly, replaced by something like panic. Why would you say that? Don’t you love me anymore?

I stared at her, trying to remember if I ever had.

You know I saved your life, she whispered, rolling up her sleeve to expose the scar she never let me forget. You know I

got these scars for you. In this world, I have no one but you. If you leave me, you’re taking away my life. Her voice cracked convincingly. Do you want to see me as a homeless rogue wolf?

I closed my eyes, suddenly too tired to fight. Stop crying. I’m not kicking you out.

Two days crawled by. I buried myself in pack business, attending meetings, reviewing contracts, anything to keep my mind from wandering to green eyes and chestnut curls.

It didn’t work.

The office hummed around me, pack members stepping carefully, sensing their Alpha’s barely contained agitation. My secretary had already replaced three shattered glasses when my phone buzzed with a message from my mother.

Your father’s at the hospital for his checkup. Selene’s here too, trying so hard to win his approval. Thought you might want to

know.

I stared at the message, feeling nothing.

Rather than reply, I tossed the phone aside. Today was the day the doctor would send the report. Nothing else mattered

A knock at my door interrupted my thoughts. Varian entered without waiting for permission, his face carefully neutral. In
