Lyra looked up, a flicker of curiosity in her eyes before she quickly lowered her gaze again, saying nothing.

I crouched down to her level. ‘You know what? These flowers have special magic. If you talk to them, they grow better.”

She hesitated, then asked in a tiny voice, “Really?”

I smiled, encouraged by this small victory. “Absolutely. Want to try?”

She nodded, then leaned forward and whispered something to the nearest rose. I felt a sudden warmth spread through my chest at the sight.

Are you and your brother doing okay?” I ventured. ‘Is there anything you need?”

Lyra looked at me, uncertainty in her eyes. “We… want to go home.”

My expression tightened. “Lyra, this is your home. I’m your father.”

She shook her head firmly. “Home is where Mom is.”

Her words stung, but I understood. “Give me some time, okay?” I said gently. “I’ll prove to you that this can be your home too.”

“Lyra!” Orion’s voice suddenly called out. He appeared from around a hedge, rushing to his sister’s side. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you.” His eyes narrowed when he saw me, and he immediately took Lyra’s hand.

“I told you not to wander off alone,” he scolded her, then turned to me with a cold glare. “Stay away from her.”

He met my gaze defiantly. “You’ve never been our father.”

The words hit harder than they should have. I watched them walk away, feeling both furious and helpless.

That afternoon, I moved my work to Moon Sanctuary to be closer to the children. I found myself creating excuses to walk past the rooms where they were playing, but each time Orion saw me, he would immediately lead Lyra away.

It was frustrating, but I told myself their anger would fade with time. They were just children, after all. Eventually, they would understand that I was their father and this was where they belonged.

A servant knocked on the door of the study I’d commandeered. “Alpha, the former Alpha requests your presence.”

“Where is he?” I asked, setting aside the contract I’d been reviewing.

“He and the former Luna are in the living room.”

“Are Orion and Lyra with them?”

“Yes, Alpha.

I stood immediately. “I’ll be right there.”

I quickly straightened my shirt and ran a hand through my hair, wanting to make a good impression. It was ridiculous to care what two five- year–olds thought of my appearance, but I couldn’t help it.

Chapter 185

When I entered the living room, Lyra was sitting beside my mother, engaged in what appeared to be a serious conversation. She glanced up at my entrance, and though she didn’t smile, she didn’t immediately look away either progress from this morning.

Orion, however, shifted his position to place himself between Lyra and me, as if protecting her from some threat I posed.

I sat down across from them. “Did you two have lunch?‘ I asked, trying to sound casual.

Lyra nodded but remained silent. Orion didn’t even acknowledge the question.

“What kind of food do you like?” I pressed. ‘I can have the chef prepare anything you want.”

Lyra hesitated, then said quietly, “I like chocolate cake.”

My eyes brightened. “What a coincidence–so do 1. I’ll have the chef make one for tonight.”
