It feels a lot like everything is falling into place. Aizen has officially started school, and it appears he’s enjoying it so far. Ayrie and Melody have been inseparable since the two of them joined a ballet class in town. The two of them stick together and have even gotten the attention of the other little girls who dance with them. Ayrie has been showing them what she learned in Redwood.

Phoebe has set up her studio and what she calls her study zone in what used to be her grandfather’s study. She didn’t change much. She just had something from the beach house brought over to make digitizing her work a lot easier.

However, she’s been the only one who hasn’t really made any friends here. I have even been friendly with the betas and warriors of the pack. We’ve been working together to help them strengthen their fighting and hunting skills. I’m also giving them free financial advice. As it turns out, money and war will always be the common denominator between every race.

“I’ve got it.” Phoebe jumps up scaring the fuck out of me.

“Baby, you gotta warn me when you do that,” I growl, trying to soothe Buddy. My skin breaks out in goosebumps, and she furthers his nerves when she snatches my tablet out of my hands and jumps onto my lap. I wrap my arms around her and pull her close so she doesn’t jump around anymore. “You’re going to give me a fucking heart attack.”

“Sorry,” she grins.

“What’s going on?”

“Since the pack officially belongs to me at the moment. We can set an alliance between us through marriage, and this could be your base. Rogue Nation.” she waves a file up. “I just finished the paperwork.”

“What?” I take it. “You wrote an entire contract marriage to establish rogue ranks among the pack wolves?”

“I finished it. Alpha Rizen started it. I’ve been going through every single pack and rogue law that could potentially bites us in the ass and here it is. Done and done,” she jumps up, making my heart race again. “I am going to go get cleaned up. I asked Maria if she could take the kids with her over the

weekend so that I can ask you on a date.”

“Hmm.” I smile, loving her enthusiasm. “All right. I am so down.”

“Great, because even if you had said, no I was probably going to drug you and drag you there myself,” she beams. “Your mom has been teaching me the

art of monksook.”

“Close. It’s pronounced Monkshood, and if you’re as good at it as you are at pronouncing it, don’t. You can kill me,” I laugh.”

“I’m actually pretty good at it. I always seem to get the names wrong. They’re weird, and I’m not very good with names. I called Cevin Kevin for like almost a whole year before he told me I have been pronouncing it wrong the whole time.” she shakes her head and points at me. “I am going to get cleaned up. You should too. I set out some clothes for you.”

“Thank you. Do I have time to read some of this while you’re getting ready?”

“Would you get ready first and then read it? That way I’m not anxious about the way you look in what I put together for you.”

“Of course,” I agree.

“Great,” she claps excitedly. “You take a shower first, and I will get my things together.”

She skips out of the room.

“She forgot I was here,” my father says from her desk. “But that was cute. Her threats are starting to get better.”

“You guys shouldn’t be teaching her how to be rude. She’s got that down,” I laugh. “Thank you for babysitting.”

“You know she hates it here,” he says quietly. “She doesn’t understand but it’s because this place is always going to be a reminder of all the fucked up shit she had to endure. It’s why I can’t stay in the main house for very long. That’s where my last hope died. All I want to do is burn it down.

“I know it’s hard for you to see certain things because you had to block out all the noise of my command for so long, but time isn’t going to make things better for her. You know how it is here. Everything is where it has to be because Rizen, as much as I hate to say it, was very good at his job. Seeing what could have been with your own eyes destroys a part of you. My outlet is blood. Just like yours.”

“I don’t know how to help her.” I stop him before he can leave. “All I can do is distract. She’s very good at evading the conversation.”

“Nathan, you’re trying to build a home with someone who’s never had one before. No one to come home to. No one to call. Where did you feel your best before her?” I look up at him. “That stage, right? I remember your first show in Pico Rivera. For a long time, I honestly believed that I destroyed you. That all that was left was your defiance. You have a way of proving me wrong.”

“I didn’t know you went to my first show,” I admit.

“I went to a lot of your shows. My favorite one was probably the one where you met Phoebe. You put on a hell of a show. It was like you knew she was there. I’d never seen you look into the crowd that way. There was this challenge in it. Something powerful, and I see it now in the way you look at her, Just ask. All you have to do is ask her what she wants. It’s that simple.”

“I want this for him. Aizen deserves to have the part of me I refused for so long. The part of me I killed when you gave me that order. I didn’t think I would ever feel again, and I do through him. It’s faint and it drives Buddy insane, but it’s there.

“I also know that if I raise them both as rogues, Aizen will resent Ayrie for being stronger than him. For wanting more. Just like Ash hates me. I see the way she looks at Phoebe. I never told Phoebe what could have been since Ash has a chosen, but I feel like shit about it every time Ash is around.”

“Ashley is a lot like your mother. Stubborn and filled with pride. She was never going to share with you because she never had to. From the very start, she chose her own path. Phoebe doesn’t have to know because Ashley doesn’t want her to know. That will always be up to your sister.
