The news about Eloise attacking us and the deal we made has finally hit the media. Almost everyone is in our favor. With Wolfe Tech back where it belongs, the stock is going back up steadily. Vince has made an announcement and informed everyone that Wolfe Tech will be collaborating with Lycan Tech, which was something Eloise had previously refused.

A lot of the hate has been turned towards me. What Eloise said wasn’t something based on her opinion. People really believe that I stole Royal Threads from Alpha Xochtl and that I killed my grandfather to make this pack part of the empire Arnold Knightly has built. Since I told them that we’ve been hiding our mating since before the twins were born, it makes a whole lot of sense.

Then there are those who love that I did that. The ones who think the sun shines out of Arnold’s ass. They think that he has groomed the best next generation of leaders, and they love that we are influencing the Alpha King to make better choices instead of the bullshit the former King had him doing.

What really worries me is Tamara Helios. She will be landing in New York soon. She wants her baby to be born there. She’s made it a public statement, and she even praised Artemis Laboratories for helping her and her mate finally expand their family.

Knight, Derek, and his father all left last night. Knight didn’t take Ayrie with him.

The girls are loving being at school. They’re doing ballet again and have even started their own school supplies segment on their PupPaws channel.

“I’m back,” Perry skips into my study with a paper bag in hand. I know she brought me the chocolate pancake balls from my new favorite spot, but I can’t bring myself to feel excited about it. “Knight said you were moping.”

“Look at her,” I say, rewinding the news and pausing it on Tamara. “I met her when I first started with Xo. She is a very whimsical lady. Loves kids and always talked about having her own. The twins were two when she began trying to have them. And now she’s going to die over something that might not even happen.”

“It’s guaranteed not to happen with her out of the way. We don’t expect you to understand, Phoebs,” she takes the remote and turns the news off. “You told me that your packhouse was on fire and that Allison was trying to save you. Things like that happen with beings like that.”

“We’re beings like that,” I remind her.

“Okay,” she comes around my desk and opens up a bunch of tabs on my computer–disaster after disaster.

“What is all this?” I ask.

“All the shit I did over the years. I caused all this destruction. I have since continued to do things like this and won’t stop,” she opens up a few other ones. “These have been things that Tamara has been responsible for.” Afist almost as long as hers comes up. “None of us is without fault, Phoebe.

“We’re playing for domination. Who we are rarely matters. You’re a mom who makes bad ass clothes, but no one gives a fuck about that. To them, you are now Alpha Phoebe Rizen, the Rogue Queen. Whether you did what you are being accused of or not doesn’t matter. The rumor is out there, and that is what you will be known for.

“When she dies, no one is going to think Oh, my god, she was pregnant and had always wanted children. A high priestess will be dead. One that has dominated in her field with her magic. She will know what she is paying for. The world will know what she is paying for. Only we will know the truth. That is what we do. We ensure the safety of the masses.

“You’re a Queen now. Knight is a King, and these are the choices we will have to make. There is no room for kindness in logic. I know you! because you’ve come this far. This is just the baby hormones getting the best of you.”

She kisses the side of my head and places the paper bag in front of me before leaving me alone again. I know what she’s saying is right, and I’d like nothing more than to simply forget about all of this and pretend this vision or dream never happened.

“Alpha Rizen?” I look up at Allison and wave her in. “I have what you asked for.”

“Oh, great. I can use the distraction,” I nod. She rushes over and sets two folders down between us.

“People are always going to twist things no matter how well–intended your actions are,” she says. “Don’t let the media get to you. We know the truth. I mean, had to beg you to stay practically.”

“I know. I think it’s just the hormones and the stress of everything that’s happened. It’s catching up, and I hate when Knight is gone?

I find that telling the truth to cover up what I’m really feeling is the easiest way out of an awkward conversation. I begin to review the names for the new elder list. I see a few names I’ve seen crossed out in my grandfather’s journals.

Elders who tried to undermine everything he was doing. People who didn’t want the change he was attempting to bring to the pack. Things that weren’t as “radical” as what I’ve been presenting. Things are moving forward much faster than I expected.

“Do you know these?” she asks when I highlight them.

“Alpha Rizen did. He kept a log of council meetings. All of them have cliffnotes. I trust you don’t have a problem with his notes.”

“Of course not,” she says, sitting back.

“I want to meet with them, Ally. I want to ensure we’re on the same page before making any decisions. I asked for a list so that I can make that decision. Not just to agree with you.”

“Right,” she nods, but it seems I’ve upset her again.

“And the new beta position?”
