Chapter 152
Chapter 152
The smell of hot chocolate and baked goods fills the cabin of my car. Knight reversed it so we can sit in the trunk and be able to see the view of the roaring ocean over the cliffside of the territory. He opens the trunk and lets the cold, salty air in.
The roar of the rain becomes louder, calming the anxious way I’ve felt since arriving and silencing the voices that seem to echo in my ears even after we were left alone in what will be our villa.
“This is better,” he sighs and pulls me closer.
“Much better,” I agree. “Can I ask you something? Why does it feel so crowded here?”
“Because this is a very united pack. Everyone knows everything about everyone. They share a whole lot. It’s what makes them deadly, and your wolf feels that. Rogues usually steer clear of this place.”
“Is everything at court okay? You and your dad have been on the phone a lot lately.”
“Yeah, everything at court has been running smoothly. Turns out the old man makes a stupendous rogue,” he smiles. “It suits him.”
“That’s good.” I bump his shoulder, loving that for him. “He’s out of his fucking mind.”
“One hundred percent,” he laughs. “You know. I was ready to kill him.”
“I know,” I rest my head on his shoulder and stuff a piece of my strawberries–and–cream–filled croissant in my mouth. “I’m glad you didn’t. We have a free babysitter.”
“Shut up,” he grins. “How are you feeling? You’ve been kind of down since we got here.”
“I don’t know. I guess I thought I would feel more than what I do everywhere else. I thought it would make me feel at home, or at the very least, it would give Midnight some kind of footing. I guess we’re not the kind of wolf that needs a collective.”
“You get used to it–the buzzing, I mean. Your senses are heightened by a million compared to theirs. I learned that early on. Just try to focus on what’s in front of you.”
“How do you know exactly what I’m feeling?” I scoot a bit so I can turn my body to face him. He smiles my favorite smile.
“I feel it too. You’re really good at blocking me out when you want, but you rarely ever do.”
“Name one time I have,” I laugh.
“Every time you do shenanigans with Perry. The night you handcuffed me to my office chair. I would have given anything to know what you were feeling or thinking. You were locked in.”
“Knight,” I growl at him, feeling my face heat up.
“It’s okay, Angel. This is a good thing. I’ve been thinking about the next time you may corner me and how I’m going to make that happen.”
1 pick my croissant, trying not to blush as hard as I am. My heart is fluttering because there is no way in hell this is considered beating with how fast it’s going.
“I don’t know how it happens.”
“I think I can get your weird sister to give me the footage from that day, and we can highlight together,” he grins.
“That’s not what I mean,” I laugh, flicking a piece of my pastry at him. I get him right between the eyebrows. He snorts, wiping it away. “I mean the blocking part. I don’t have control of that. You have to take it up with Midnight.”
“If I were to take you up to the range while the kids are at school next week, would you accept?”

Chapter 152
“A shooting range? You’re taking me on a date to the shooting range?” I squeak. He grins, loving my reaction.
“I wouldn’t call it a date, but if you’re that excited. Yeah,” he chuckles. “I am asking you out on that date”
“I accept. I haven’t done that since I was like fourteen. It was one of the things I liked about hanging out with my dad away from the cats.
“You don’t have to keep calling him that,” he says, sitting back. “He doesn’t deserve it.”
“We have to disagree on that. You know he’s Leopard, right?”
“Yes,”
“He became that after I left.”
“What? What do you mean?”
“My dad was human the entire time I lived with them. Maybe it was because he knew that if she turned him, he would want me out faster. But he didn’t let her mark him until after they kicked me out when I graduated from school.
“He took care of me until I don’t know. I was twenty, maybe. He gave me a debit card for emergencies, and he would deposit three thousand dollars a month into it. I would never use it all, but it helped me a lot. I stopped using it when I started working for Xo. It still had a year to expire when I put it in
the shredder.
“He may not be my father, but he’s the only dad I know. He also showed up to everything. My graduations, my awards, my soccer games, and plays. All of it. That man was there. So, maybe he and his mate were pieces of shit, but nothing is going to erase the fact that he was my dad when no one else was.
“Okay.”
“Did your dad tell you why he picked him up?”
“Yeah,” he says, letting out a heavy sigh before taking a drink from his foam cup. “You finally said something that saved them.”
“And their kids?”
“They’re never going to see them again, and they’re lucky we convinced the court to spare them. So, don’t look at me with your big, pretty eyes and ask me to do anything about that. Fuck them.” his jaw flexes as he sets the foam cup down beside him.
“Are they being taken care of?”
“Yeah, there are cat dens like theirs all over the world. They went to a good family. My mother made sure of it.”
“Thank you.” I place my hand over his. His eyes meet mine, and they’re glowing red.
“I’ve never had to hold back until met you,” he whispers. “I hate that you force me to forgive when all I want to do is tear them apart.”
“I know.” I scoot closer to him again.
“Why do you forgive so easily?”
“Being mad at someone is so tiring. I forget sometimes, and I can’t ever take it back like what happened with Alpha Rizen. I wasn’t even mad at him, and now I never get to know if he could have been a cool grandpa.
“Now I have to get to know his people without him. I don’t get to share how cool my kids are or how happy I am with you and your family to anyone who could potentially care enough about me to consider me their family. I officially have no one on team Rizen.”
“I am one hundred percent team Rizen.” he wraps his arms around me. “I guess I see what you mean. I’m seeing a completely different side of my father thanks to you. I never once considered having inside jokes with him, but here we are.”
