Buried by My Alpha Crowned novel Chapter 9

Chapter 9

Three months after the Council’s verdict, I stood in the conference room of my new headquarters, watching the city skyline through floor to ceiling windows. The morning sun cast long shadows across the mahogany table where contracts lay waiting for signatures.

“Ms. Carter, the Galaxy Technologies representatives have arrived,” my assistant announced.

I straightened my blazer and nodded. “Send them in.”

The door opened, and I turned to greet Galaxy Tech’s delegation. My breath caught as familiar blue eyes met mine across the room.

“Evelyn?”

Froste Whitmore stood frozen in the doorway, his briefcase halfway to the fibor. Behind him, his team shuffled awkwardly, clearly sensing the sudden tension.

My heart hammered against my ribs. Of all the people in all the companies in all the world, why did it have to be him?

‘Mr. Whitmore,” I managed, extending my hand in a purely professional gesture. “I wasn’t aware you’d be heading Galaxy’s expansion committee.”

His warm fingers closed around mine, and for a moment, I was transported back to our university days-study sessions in the library, late-night conversations about our dreams, the way he’d looked at me when I’d chosen Cassian over him.

‘Neither did I expect…” He paused, his eyes searching my face. “You look… different.”

Different. That was one way to put it. The last time he’d seen me, I’d been a broken shell of a woman, barely able to stand after my seventh miscarriage. Now I stood before him in a designer suit, commanding a multi-million dollar empire.

‘Shall we discuss the merger terms?” I gestured to the conference table, desperate to regain control of the situation.

The next two hours crawled by. Every time Froste spoke, memories crashed over me like waves. His voice presenting quarterly reports became his voice whispering comfort in my ear. His professional smile became the devastated expression he’d worn when I’d told him about my mate bond with Cassian.

When his team left for lunch, Froste lingered.

‘Walk with me?” he asked quietly.

We found ourselves in the building’s rooftop garden, the city humming below us. He leaned against the railing, studying me with those perceptive eyes that had always seen too much.

‘I tried to find you,” he said finally. “After what happened at Moonvale. The whole supernatural community was talking about it.”

‘I needed to disappear for a while.”

‘Evelyn…” His voice was gentle, careful. “I’m sorry. About everything you went through. About the pups.”

The familiar ache twisted in my chest. Even now, months later, the mention of my lost children could still bring me to my knees.

‘I should have fought harder,” he continued. “Back in university, when you started dating Cassian. I should have-”

‘Should have what?” I turned to face him. “Told me my fated mate was a monster? Would you have believed it yourself?”
