Chapter 10
“Tell me about these past few months,” Froste said softly. “Really tell me. Not the sanitized version the media got.”
I gripped the railing tighter. “You don’t want to hear that story”
“I do. I’ve been worried about you for years, Evelyn. Years. Do you know what it was like, watching you fade away? Watching him destroy you plece by piece?”
His words hit like a physical blow. I’d forgotten how direct he could be, how he cut straight through my defenses.
The night I discovered the truth about Cassian,” I began, my voice barely above a whisper, “I wanted to die. I sat in that hospital bed, paralyzed, knowing my nate had murdered our children, and I just… I wanted it to be over.”
Toste’s knuckles went white on the railing.
But then I got angry. Really, truly angry. And I remembered something you told me once-that the best revenge is success.”
I said that?”
Sophomore year. When that professor tried to fail me for refusing his advances.” I glanced at him. “You said the best way to beat bullies was to become so uccessful they couldn’t touch you anymore. That being an orphan didn’t make me powerless-it made me free to create my own destiny.”
i sad smile crossed his face. “I remember. You were so upset, ready to drop out of school entirely. You kept saying you had nothing, no family to fall back on…”
You wouldn’t let me. You made me fight.” I turned to face him fully. “You always made me fight, Froste. Even when I didn’t want to. Even when I felt like I had 10 one in the world.”
le stepped closer. “You were never alone. Not really. I never stopped caring about you. Not once, in all these years.”
ty wolf, who’d been silent for so long, stirred restlessly. She remembered this man. Remembered his scent, his warmth, the way he’d held us when we’d cried bout being alone in the world, about having no memories of family, no one to call our own.
I lost my wolf,” I said suddenly. “Did you know that? After the seventh miscarriage, she just… disappeared. I couldn’t shift, couldn’t feel the pack bonds, ouldn’t sense anything. I was essentially human for months.”
But she came back?”
Partially. She’s still… wounded. Cautious. She doesn’t trust easily anymore. And sometimes…” I touched my back unconsciously, where the crescent moon irthmark sat just below my shoulder blade. “Sometimes I feel like there’s something I’m missing. Something important about who I am.”
Smart wolf.” He reached out, his fingers barely brushing mine. “I want to be there for you. Not rushing into anything, just… let me help you rebuild. Let me be ne family you never had.”
looked at his hand, so close to mine. Taking it would mean opening myself up to vulnerability again. It would mean trusting someone with pieces of my heart d thought were permanently shattered.
