Chapter 42
I tried to push my discomfort down and waved at her in greeting. She didn’t respond immediately, just staring at me instead. Merhold’s smile dropped when his gaze landed on her. Olavir was no longer smiling as well.
“That’s Niamh.” I didn’t even realize when Olavir had come up beside me. “Our aunt.”
I swallowed down and pushed all my nervousness away as I made my way to her. “It’s nice to finally meet you, Aunt Niamh. I’m glad
you made it here safely.”
“Likewise,” Niamh wrinkled her nose before plastering a fake smile on her face.
All of a sudden, her eyes began to tear up as she peered closely at me. Without warning, she held on to my arms. The tears were now dropping down her cheeks.
“Oh, Evelyn darling.” She wiped a tear off her cheek. “How I’ve missed you all these years.”
I tried to put a smile on her face but I could feel her nails digging into my arms. Every single part of me was uncomfortable and I
wanted nothing more than to get out of her grip.
Luckily, Merhold came to my rescue. “Niamh. That’s enough.”
He turned to the guards. “Escort her out of the premises.”
That was enough to get her to let go of me. As the guards came up to her side, her former sneer had turned to one of pity.
“Your brother is a grumpy crank. Pity you’ll have to endure it from now on.” She shook her head as she stared at him, a smirk on her
face.
Merhold’s frown deepened and I could see the anger boiling behind his eyes. I hurriedly made my way to him and put a hand on his
arm.
“Please don’t think about her.” I tried to reassure him. He turned to me, anger still written all over his face.
“We’re family, okay? Her word means nothing to me.”
That was enough for Merhold to calm down. The fire in his eyes was almost gone and there was a small smile on his face.
He looked pleased by what I’d said. In all honesty, I’d say it over and over again so he understood just how much I cherished him.
He turned to the guards again. “Get her out of my sight.”
They nodded, dragging her out of the room despite her protests. Merhold turned to his assistant and nodded his head a little.
The assistant went away and came back not a moment later, holding some gifts in hand. I could barely hold back my surprise.
“These are for you.” Merhold said with a smile.
“Really?” I stared at the gifts that had been placed before me.
My hand moved to open one but Olavir stopped me before I could. “Consider it a surprise. You can open it later.”
I hummed out a reply just as Merhold started to speak again. “Our brothers are on their way.”
My eyes widened. “Really?”
He nodded. “You should go get ready. When we come back, you’ll appear before everyone as the high princess of the Carte family

I took in all he’d said. Merhold clapped his hands and a couple of maids filtered into the room.
“These are your maids of honour. They’ll help you get ready.”
They bowed before me and escorted me to the lounge where the make–up and preparations would be done.
Just as they were about to start, my phone started to ring. A feeling of dread crept up my spine when I saw it was none other than
Froste.
I let out a breath and picked the call, answering before I even realized it.
“I’m not coming back to you. How many times do I have to spell it out till you get it through your head?”
