Chapter 330
Brian frowned, his disapproval clear. “It can’t be a coincidence, Jessi. Don’t give people the benefit of the doubt.”
Jessica almost laughed at the irony. She wasn’t giving anyone the benefit of the doubt that’s precisely why she’d said what she did.
She thought, ‘Brian’s so convinced now, but what happens when we discover it was Madeline? Will he still be able to handle punishing her then?”
The more Jessica thought about it, the worse her mood became, and her attitude turned noticeably hostile.
She shoved Brian’s shoulder. “I said it’s a coincidence, so it’s a coincidence. You can get lost now–you’re not welcome in my house.”
Brian hadn’t expected her sudden change in demeanor and froze completely.
Seeing his reaction, Jessica pushed him again, harder this time. Under normal circumstances, she would never act this way.
Brian knew that, which made him even more concerned. He reached out and gently caught her hands. “Alright, I’ll go. Just don’t get yourself worked up.
His gaze dropped to her belly. “You’re pregnant–you can’t keep getting angry like this.”
Jessica yanked her hand away, completely dismissing his concern. “I don’t need you to worry about me.”
Brian threw his hands up in defeat. “Fine. I won’t interfere. I’m leaving right now, okay? Don’t be mad.”
He turned to go, but he spun back around when he reached the door. “Jess, I’ll be right outside if you need anything. Just call out.”
With that, he pulled the door shut behind him.
Jessica stared at the closed door, her teeth worrying her bottom lip. ‘Who asked for his protection anyway?‘
Outside, Brian had just finished telling his secretary he wouldn’t be coming in today when his phone rang. The security team he’d assigned to watch Jess.
The bodyguard said, “Mr. Atkinson, we’ve got the surveillance results. Someone’s been leaving threatening items at Mrs. Atkinson’s door for the past two
weeks.”
“What? Two weeks ago? You mean this has been going on that long and you’re just telling me now?!” Brian nearly exploded with rage.
Jessi had been terrorized by some unknown person for half a month, and Brian knew nothing about it.
He thought, ‘How terrified must Jessi have been during those two weeks? How many times had she been frightened out of her mind?‘
No wonder Jessi looked so pale this morning. She’d probably been scared again just yesterday.
-The thought made Brian furious and sick with worry. He wanted to storm through that door and demand answers, but forced himself to hold back.
Jessi didn’t trust him. Nothing he said would matter. If he pushed too hard, she’d only hate him more.
That wasn’t what he wanted.
On the other end of the line, the bodyguard kept apologizing.
Brian breathed heavily and growled into the phone, “Keep digging. I don’t care what it costs–find whoever’s behind this and bring them to me.”
“Yes, sir,” the bodyguard immediately agreed and hung up to continue the investigation.
Brian was still fuming when he grabbed his phone and called Jackson, “Buy out Jessi’s apartment immediately–the one above, the one below, and the
