Chapter 341
Wesley shook his head. “It’s fine. You don’t need to worry about losing control like that. You’re sick.”
He didn’t want Jessica to keep bottling everything up when she was already hurting so much. That would only make things worse.
Jessica nodded. “I know. Dr. Finch, what should I do?” Her eyes went empty as she spoke. “I told Jacob I’d give him an answer soon, but i have no idez what to say. He’s just going to be more disappointed.”
Wesley sighed, “If you’re worried about disappointing the kids, maybe you should try letting them go. And let yourself go too.”
“Let them go?” Jessica looked lost. “I’ve been trying so hard to stay away from them. Isn’t that letting them go? They’re the ones who won’t let me go,”
Brian kept forcing his way into her new life with Jacob, over and over again.
If he could just stay cold like before–treat each other like strangers after the divorce–maybe she would have moved on by now.
“They’re the ones who won’t let me go!” Jessica repeated it, as if she were trying to convince Wesley. Or maybe herself.
Wesley noticed her mood spiraling and quickly said, “Right, it’s all his fault, not yours. Don’t think about that now. Let me help you work through your current situation.”
Jessica snapped back to reality, realizing she’d almost fallen into that emotional pit again. She rubbed her face with both hands, trying to clear her head. “Okay, Dr. Finch. Go ahead.”
Wesley didn’t want her slipping back into those dark thoughts, so he jumped right in. “Ms. Grant, from everything you’ve said and done, I think you want to teach him deep down. Otherwise, you would’ve just said no.”
He continued, “You wouldn’t be considering it, and you definitely wouldn’t be losing sleep over it enough to come see me in the middle of the night.”
Jessica fell silent. Wesley had hit the nail on the head.
“But if I agree, I’ll only get more tangled up with him and Jacob,” she said after a long pause, her voice uncertain.
“So what?” Wesley asked. “Whatever happens, it can’t be worse than how things are now. Unless you tell me you dare to walk away again?”
Jessica shook her head. “Of course I do, but I don’t want to get back together with him.”
With Madeline still pregnant and watching from the sidelines, agreeing to reconcile with Brian would be pathetic. Her pride wouldn’t allow it.
“Teaching Jacob to paint has nothing to do with getting back together,” Wesley said patiently. “As long as you stay firm about not reconciling, no one can force you.”
Jessica looked down, silent.
Wesley deliberately provoked her. “Unless you’re afraid you can’t resist?”
“Of course not,” Jessica replied without hesitation.
As long as Madeline was still around, she’d never forget the humiliation.
Wesley said, “Then that settles it. Ms. Grant, let’s be honest–Jacob has changed. You can’t bear to give Jacob up, and you don’t want to reconcile. You can absolutely reconnect with your son.”
He smiled as he added, “That way, even if your ex–husband does remarry, you can try to fight for custody again.”
Jessica stared at him in shock. The possibility had never crossed her mind.
Chapter 341
Fight for custody again? Do I even want to? Could I actually win? Would Jacob be okay with it? Would Brian let go? The questions hit her all at once. instantly washing away her earlier sadness.
She found herself seriously considering Wesley’s suggestion.
Wesley watched her shift focus and quietly breathed a sigh of relief. The last thing Jessica needed was to get stuck drowning in her grief, especially while pregnant.
“Look, if your ex is really still tangled up with his mistress like you said, then as long as you don’t give him any hope, he’ll eventually give up on you and go running back to her,” Wesley said with a slight smile.
“Then you’ll be free,” he added.
But Jessica felt a strange discomfort at his words. ‘Free? So I get my freedom while Brian and Madeline live happily ever after? That sounds just perfect!
Even as the thought crossed her mind, her hands clenched into fists without her realizing it.
Jessica took a deep breath and smiled as she looked at Wesley. “Thank you for talking me through this, Dr. Finch. I feel much better now.”
Wesley noticed Jessica’s mind wandering but didn’t call her out on it. Instead, he smiled back. “Don’t mention it. I’m just glad I could help.”
He paused, then continued, “About teaching the kids to paint–I hope you’ll say yes. Don’t fight what your heart is telling you?
Jessica was already standing up. She nodded as she handed the cat back to Wesley. “Thanks for the reminder, Dr. Finch. I hear you.”
“Good. I’ll drive you home then.” Wesley took Tres and stood up.
Jessica shook her head. “No need. I’ll just grab a cab.” She waved goodbye and walked out of the coffee shop first.
The moment she stepped outside, she saw Brian waiting by the curb. “You-”
“Are you cold?” Brian cut her off, carrying a bag as he walked over. He knelt down, pulled out his shoes and socks, then gently lifted her foot to put them
Jessica instinctively pulled back and nearly kicked him in the face.
In the driver’s seat, Jackson–who’d rushed over in the middle of the night after getting his boss‘ call–watched the scene unfold, his heart racing.
“Don’t move. You’ll fall.” Brian tilted his head slightly but gripped her foot even tighter.
“I don’t need your help.”
Jessica turned away, embarrassed, trying to pull her foot back. But Brian held it firmly against his knee.
Soft socks slipped over her feet, followed by warm slip–on shoes with enclosed heels.
Once Jessica had both shoes on, Brian finally stood up,/He carefully placed her sandals in the bag, not wanting to leave anything behind. “Can I drive you home?”
