Chapter 327
Jacob had spent the entire weekend with Brian in Sandia, playing and having the time of his life.
When Jessica saw him again on Monday, she almost didn’t recognize him. “How did you get so sunburned?” She stared at Jacob’s face, red as a tomato her expression showing clear disapproval.
Jacob noticed her reaction and quickly tried to explain. “Mom, don’t worry! I already saw a doctor. He said I’ll be back to normal in a week, tops
“You saw a doctor?” Jessica’s brow furrowed, Shed him by the arm and yanked up his shirt to check his back. “You got sunburned this badly?!
Jacob looked at her stern face, his voice small ain. “Mom, are you mad at me?”
Jessica turned and headed back inside. “Why should I be mad? You can go now. Close the door behind you.” If Jacob didn’t care about his own body, then she had no reason to care either.
“I’m not leaving, Mom. You haven’t seen the gifts I brought you yet.” Jacob jogged after Jessica, refusing to leave no matter what.
Jessica ignored him and leaned back against the couch, closing her eyes to rest.
Seeing this, Jacob instinctively quieted his movements.
He carefully unpacked each gift he’d brought, setting them out individually. When he looked up, Jessica opened her eyes at some point and stared down at the items he’d just arranged.
Jacob’s face lit up immediately. He grabbed a photo and rushed over to Jessica. “Mom, look! This is me and Dad when we first got to Sandia. We took this in front of the hotel. I wasn’t even sunburned yet.”
Jessica looked at the photo showing Jacob standing beside Brian, completely unharmed. Then she looked at the sunburned boy in front of her.
Inside, she cursed Brian even more fiercely. ‘He can’t care for a child and won’t even ask anyone for help? He just drags Jacob to the beach like it’s nothing. Does he even care about Jacob’s skin at all?‘
Jacob continued, “And this one’s from when we first got to the beach. It was so hot that day, but the water felt amazing.”
While Jessica silently cursed Brian, Jacob pulled out another photo to show her.
She glanced at it, then said, “Is this when you got burned?”
Jacob froze. ‘If I admit it, will Dad look bad? But if I don’t, Mom already figured it out. What’s the point of lying?‘
After a moment of internal struggle, Jacob decided to throw Brian under the bus to save himself.
.“Yeah, Dad’s never put sunscreen on me before. He didn’t know how to do it right. But he fixed it the next day! Mom, please don’t be mad at Dad.” Even in the end, Jacob couldn’t help but defend Brian a little.
Jessica let out a cold laugh. “Why would I be angry? I’m not the one who got sunburned.”
Jacob fell silent. He wondered, ‘It makes sense. But wait, why does Mom still seem mad?‘
He studied Jessica’s face carefully, thinking hard before finally saying, “Mom, I’m thirsty. Do we have anything to drink?”
It was better to skip that topic entirely.
Jessica got up and brought him a carton of milk.
Chapter 327
“Wow, it’s my favorite kind! Thanks, Mom.” Jacob’s face lit up when he saw the milk Jessica had brought him, he couldn’t help but chém –
Jessica’s expression froze. Her outstretched hand stopped mid–air, unable to move. “Your favorite?” She couldn’t remember when the d bought it
“Yeah, Mom, did you forget?” Jacob looked up in confusion, but when he saw the bewildered look covering Jessica’s face, fe flore.
Jessica slowly pulled her hands back and sank into the sofa, her voice weak. “Yeah, I forgot.”
If only she really had forgotten.
Jessica thought about the fridge she’d just seen–half–filled with Jacob’s favorite food and drinks. The realization hit her like a punch to the chest
She couldn’t even remember when she’d bought all the
things.
But there they were, filling her fridge bit by bit, and she hadn’t even noticed what was happening. At this rate, Her apartment would soon become another Atkinson Villa.
The thought left Jessica feeling completely drained.
Jacob watched the change in Jessica’s face, and guilt washed over him suddenly.
Maybe he shouldn’t have come.
He could have left the photo album and souvenirs in her mailbox and left. But his selfish heart had made him knock on Jessica’s door, and now he’d
made her this upset.
He was such a failure.
The more Jacob thought about it, the worse he felt. He shot up from his seat and looked at Jessica carefully. “Mom, I should go now. You get some rest.
Jessica looked up at him tiredly, staying quiet for a few seconds before saying, “Remember to put medicine on those sunburns. And be careful on your way home.”
Jacob’s eyes lit up again. Jessica still cared about him after all. This time, he didn’t dare get carried away. He nodded obediently and turned to leave.
Jessica watched his retreating figure, her emotions tangled in knots.
Outside the door, Jacob finally broke down in tears.
Knowing Jessica still cared about him should have been enough, but he couldn’t stop the sadness from overwhelming him.
Brian, who had been waiting outside, heard the crying and rushed over. He scooped up Jacob and carried him away.
Once they were in the elevator, he asked gently, “Why are you crying? Did your
mom yell at you?”
“No way! Mom would never yell at me.” Even through his tears, Jacob defended Jessica.
“Why are you crying if she didn’t yell at you?” Brian pressed.
“I made Mom sad.” Jacob sobbed.
Brian’s eyes sharpened instantly when he heard this. He set Jacob down and demanded, “What happened? What did you do?”
Jacob tearfully recounted what had occurred. Brian’s brow furrowed deeper with every word.
If Jacob was telling the truth, Jessica’s mood swings were becoming too unpredictable. That
wasn’t good for her current state.
