“I’m Lyra, not ‘little girl,” she corrected, sitting up straighter, an unexpectedly authoritative expression crossing her small features. The gesture reminded me of someone, though I couldn’t place who.

“Alright, Lyra,” I nodded, oddly amused by her correction. “Care to tell me why a wolf cub is wandering alone at the pack border?”

Her green eyes welled with fresh tears. “I–I couldn’t find my mommy. Her voice quivered, though she was clearly trying to be brave.

Something twisted in my chest at the sight of her fighting tears. Without thinking, I reached out to stroke her hair. “You’re safe now. Don’t be afraid.”

“Mommy took us to the big park,” Lyra explained, hands gesturing expansively. “Orion said the swings weren’t high enough, but I thought they were super fun!”

I found myself listening intently as she described her “best day ever” with her mother and brother. Her animated storytelling was strangely captivating.

“Mommy let us shift our wolf ears,” she whispered conspiratorially, “but just a little bit. So the humans couldn’t see.”

I raised my eyebrows, surprised Lysandra would allow such young cubs to attempt even partial shifting. That required significant control and talent.

“Then,” Lyra continued, hands dancing through the air, “we wanted ice cream! The kind that dances on your tongue!”

“The kind that makes your wolf eyes glow?” I asked, unexpectedly caught up in her enthusiasm.

“Yes!” She clapped excitedly. “You’ve had it too! Mommy says it has moongrass that makes wolf cubs stronger!”

She explained that Lysandra had left them sitting on a park bench while she went to buy the ice cream.

“Orion got impatient,” she pouted, mimicking a serious expression that struck me as oddly familiar. “He’s always like that. He said, ‘I’m going to find Mom,‘ and told me to follow him.”

“But I saw a little fox!” Her excitement returned instantly, green eyes sparkling. “It had red fur and it talked to me!”

“It talked to you?” I questioned, eyebrow arched.

“Well, not with its mouth,” she clarified, tapping her temple. “In here. Mommy says it’s because I’m special like her.”

Lyra explained how she’d chased the fox, hoping to befriend it, only to lose her way at the forest’s edge.

“I tried to sense Mommy,” she admitted/voice dropping. “But I’m too little to use mind link yet.”

“Then I saw a lady with brown hair like Mommy’s, but when I ran over, it wasn’t her,” her eyes grew wet again. “I called and called, but Mommy didn’t come. I was scared.”

“Until I smelled you,” she looked up at me with complete trust. “Then I wasn’t scared anymore. Weird, right?”

I could only nod, throat tight with emotions I couldn’t name.

“If you get lost again,” I said gently but firmly, “the first thing you should do is borrow someone’s phone to call your mom or try to reach your Alpha through the pack bond. Understand?”

Lyra listened with surprising intensity, then nodded seriously. “I’ll remember.”

Suddenly, her eyes widened as if struck by inspiration. “Uncle, can I have your phone?”

I raised an eyebrow. “To call your mom?”

“Yes!” She nodded vigorously, pigtails bouncing. “I can use your phone to tell Mommy I’m safe!”

I found myself smiling at her quick thinking. “You learn fast, little wolf cub.”

Lyra giggled at the nickname, the sound like silver bells. “Orion would be mad. He says only he can call me wolf cub.
