Chapter 41
“OK.”
“I don’t agree.”
Two completely different responses rang out in the living room. Hearing her son’s rejection, Serene looked at Declan in disbelief and roared, “Have you lost your mind? Phoebe cheated on you, and you still don’t wanna divorce her?”
Declan’s face remained impassive. “This is between me and her. Stay out of it, Mom.”
Serene let out a sharp laugh and added, “Stay out of it? Declan, has she cast some kind of spell on you? She humiliated you in front of the whole city, and you still want to stay with her?”
Declan insisted, “I already said it had nothing to do with you. Stop interfering in our business, please.”
Before Serene could fire back, Phoebe suddenly spoke up, “I agree to the divorce, as long as you can get Declan to sign the divorce papers.”
Serene was surprised to hear Pheobe’s reply, and she asked with a frown, “You’re really willing to leave just like that?”
Phoebe sneered, “Didn’t you just say it yourself? We have no children, and yeah, I did go to that bar.”
Serene’s eyes stayed on Phoebe, cold and distrustful. “You better keep your word.”
“If you don’t believe me, I can put it in writing,” said Pheobe firmly.
Before she could finish the sentence, Declan snapped, “Phoebe, shut up.”
She turned to him, her expression calm. “See? Everyone thinks we shouldn’t be together. Why are you still holding on?”
She wondered, ‘I really don’t get it. I handed him a free pass to be with Jennifer–isn’t this exactly what he wants? Why hesitate now?‘
Declan was silent for a few seconds before grabbing her wrist and walking out.
Watching them leave, Serene was seething with anger. She pulled out her phone and made a call to her husband, “Matthew, come home. We need to talk.”

The moment they stepped out of the house, Phoebe yanked her hand away and said in a sharp tone, “Declan, I’m tired of dealing with your mother. Why can’t you just let me go?”
Declan came to a stop and met her eyes. “If you don’t want to deal with her, then don’t. If she asks you to see her, you can just ignore her.”
Phoebe was a little shocked by his words. She never expected Declan to support her over his own mother.
But she quickly regained her composure and replied, “It doesn’t matter what you say or do. I just want a divorce, and I won’t change my mind.”
Declan’s expression turned even colder, and he said word by word, “As long as I don’t want it, you’re not getting rid of the title of Mrs. Richardson.”
There was no point arguing when they were just going in circles, so Phoebe let it drop. She softened her tone and spoke up, “I don’t want to talk about this today. Let’s go home.”

The ride home was silent. The moment they arrived, Phoebe grabbed the dress and disappeared into her bedroom.
The next morning, Phoebe handed Cora the dress right after she arrived at her office. She said to Cora with a big smile, “Happy birthday.”
Cora’s eyes lit up the second she saw the gown named Heart’s Whisper. She ran her fingers over the fabric, clearly enchanted. “Oh my, this is really for me?”
Pheobe replied, “Yeah, I had it made a while ago, just hadn’t picked it up yet.”
Cora threw her arms around Phoebe, beaming. “Pheebs, this is the best surprise. I’m wearing this on my date tonight.”
Phoebe raised her eyebrows and asked, “Wait, you got a boyfriend?”
Cora’s cheeks tinged pink, and she replied, “Yeah, I’ll introduce him when the time’s right.”

Seeing happiness etched on Cora’s face, Phoebe was intrigued. She wondered what kind of man could catch Cora’s attention.
“I was gonna take you out for dinner tonight, but since you’ve got a date, we’ll do it another time,” said Pheobe with a smile.
Cora replied, “Sounds good.”
