Chapter 6
I dozed off, and when I woke up, Cathy’s WhatsApp messages were popping up like a barrage of bullets.
I didn’t even have time to reply before screenshots and messages came crashing down on me.
Cathy: [Elowen, take a look at this. This is your boyfriend, Jaxon.]
I clicked on the first screenshot. It was a page from a financial news website.
The headline was huge and jarring. [Gable Group Heir Matthew Gable Makes His First Public Appearance, Possibly Set to Marry the Heiress of York Group.]
I stared intently at the name Matthew, feeling as if my heart was being tightly clenched by an invisible hand, almost suffocating me.
Below was a photo. In it, a handsome man was surrounded by a crowd, standing under the spotlight.
He was dressed in a well–tailored suit, with a faint smile on his face, exuding an innate air of nobility in every gesture. That was Jaxon. No, that was Matthew.
My fingers trembled as I enlarged the photo and scrutinized his face carefully.
I was all too familiar with this face.
I had caressed and kissed it countless times.
But now, it felt so strange, so distant.
Cathy: [Elowen, snap out of it. He doesn’t even go by Jaxon. His name is Matthew. He’s the heir of the Gable family, who have been keeping his identity a closely guarded secret until recently.]
Cathy: [You know the Gable family, right? They’re the real deal when it comes to high society. People like us don’t even deserve to serve them.]
Cathy: [His being with you was just a game. You really thought he would marry you?]
I didn’t reply to Cathy. I just mechanically opened the next screenshot.
It was a photo of a wedding invitation.
The gold–embossed font and exquisite design all spoke to the opulence and grandeur of the wedding.
The groom was Matthew Gable.
The bride was Hedy York.
Cathy: [Elowen, let me tell you, Matthew and Hedy’s wedding is set for the fifth of next month, at the Gable Hotel.]
Cathy: [You know the Cable Hotel? It’s the most luxurious hotel in the city. A single table at the reception costs hundreds of thousands of dollars.]
Cathy: [With a family background like the Gables, even we are out of their league. Not to mention you]
I understood what Cathy was trying to tell me.

Chapter 6
She was saying that Jaxon and I were never in the same world to begin with.
I should have faced the reality sooner and let go.

Cathy: [Elowen, take my advice and break up with him. It’s better to have a quick, sharp pain than a long, drawn–out one. He’s been lying to you all along. That’s unforgivable.]
Cathy: [Staying with him will only lead to more heartbreak.]
She was right.
