Chapter 5

My stomach began to ache. After a moment of hesitation, I decided to call Jaxon.

“Hello, Jaxon,” I said weakly, my voice trembling slightly.

“Elowen, what’s wrong? Why do you sound so weak?” Jaxon’s voice on the other end of the line immediately became tense.

“I have a stomachache,” I replied, clutching my stomach and curling up on the sofa, feeling waves of cramping pain.

“A stomachache? Your period isn’t due yet, is it?” His tone was filled with concern.

Over these three years, he had been more attentive to my menstrual cycle than I was myself.

He would always calculate the dates in advance and prepare sanitary pads for me well ahead of time.

When I experienced severe pain, he would thoughtfully rub my stomach to alleviate the discomfort.

Later on, he somehow found a doctor and insisted that I see him. The doctor prescribed medication for six months, and gradually, my menstrual pain was completely cured.

“What’s going on? Wait there. I’m coming right back,” Jaxon said urgently on the phone.

I could even hear his rapid breathing.

Half an hour later, the sound of the door lock turning echoed through the room as Jaxon rushed in, still carrying the chill from outside and his face etched with anxiety.

I was leaning against the sofa, feeling a bit dazed, and as I watched him run toward me, for a moment, I couldn’t distinguish between reality and a dream.

“Elowen, how are you feeling? Where does it hurt?” He quickly walked over to me, squatted down, and gently touched my forehead before placing his hand on my lower abdomen, softly massaging it.

His hand was warm, carrying a familiar warmth that seemed to ease my pain a little.

“Did you eat something bad, or did you catch a chill? We should go to the hospital and get you checked out,” he said anxiously while continuing to rub my stomach.

I’m okay, I just suddenly felt a bit of pain. I’ll be fine after some rest,” I shook my head and forced a smile.

I looked up and carefully examined Jaxon’s face. He was still as gentle as ever.

“Jaxon,” I spoke softly, my voice a bit hoarse. “Do you remember what I mentioned to the landlord before?”

I paused for a moment before continuing. “I want to buy this apartment.”

I looked at him, my eyes filled with a hint of anticipation and a touch of probing. “We should have enough money to buy this small place now.”

My voice grew quieter, almost inaudible. “Once we get married, it would be a place for us to call home, wouldn’t it?”

Having said that, I felt as if a huge burden had been lifted from my heart, yet my heart was also filled with anxiety. Jaxon fell silent.

He didn’t respond to me as gently as he usually did, nor did he make any promises.

He just remained silent, his head down, his expression unreadable.

The room was eerily quiet, with only the sound of my rapid breathing.

Time seemed to stand still, each second dragging on endlessly.

“Elowen,” he finally spoke, his voice low and hoarse. “Let’s talk about marriage later Right now, the most important thing is your health.”

He stood up. “I’m taking you to the hospital. I won’t feel at ease until you’ve been checked out.”

I shook my head. “I just caught a bit of a chill. I’ll be fine after lying down and resting for a while.”

“Then go inside and rest. I’ll find some medicine for you,” Jaxon insisted, helping me into the bedroom.

I watched as he bustled around, taking care of me until I finally fell asleep.

Only then did he sit by the bed. “Elowen, let’s talk about marriage later. I want to give you the best. I can’t bear to see you suffer.”
