I looked at the face before me, so familiar yet so strange.

This face, which once made my heart race with excitement and seemed so sunny and handsome, now left me utterly unmoved.

I knew clearly that I no longer loved him.

Between us lay not just time and distance, but an insurmountable chasm.

The deceptions, the betrayals, the hurts–all were like sharp knives, slicing away my love for him bit by bit until nothing

remained.

I didn’t even know what to call him anymore.

Matthew or Jaxon?

Jaxon had once given me so many sweet illusions, but now he only brought me nauseating irony.

I was about to speak, carefully choosing my words, but he interrupted me. “Elowen, I have officially changed my name to Jaxon.”

Would a name change erase the sordid deeds he had done?

He looked at me, his eyes filled with deep affection and anticipation.

“Two years ago, I ran away from the wedding. I knew how much that wedding hurt you. Elowen, I’ve been waiting for you to come back,” he said.

His words were spoken with utmost sincerity, as if he were truly a love–struck man, pining away for his beloved.

Over these two years, he had been to Foreverin.

He had tried to contact me.

But every time I heard his voice, I would immediately hang up and block his number.

I didn’t want to hear from him again, didn’t want any more involvement with him.

He had even brazenly gone to Holybar to see my parents.

They had long known who he was–the man who had broken my heart and let me down.

They couldn’t possibly treat Jaxon kindly.

Politely showing him the door was the extent of their patience.

Before he left, my mom warned him, “Mr. Gable, please do not disturb us again. Elowen has broken up with you.”

My mom told me all this herself later on.

Jaxon was unaware of it all.

He continued to speak of his deep love, his regrets, and his changes.

He looked at me eagerly. “Elowen, I’ve started learning to be a mature man, someone you can rely on.”

“1” He took a deep breath. “I still want to be with you. Elowen, give me a chance, will you?”

“Let’s start over, will you?” His voice trembled with a hint of pleading.

But my heart was like still water, not even a ripple stirred.

I looked at him and said calmly, “Jaxon, it’s impossible between us. We are not the same kind of people. We never were from the beginning. You come from a wealthy family, living a life of luxury, while I am just a girl from an ordinary family.

“Our values and outlooks on life are completely different. These differences can’t be changed just by effort. There’s a chasm between us. You can never understand the hardships and struggles I’ve been through, and I can never adapt to the extravagance and hypocrisy of your world. So, let’s just stop.”

“Let’s end this gracefully. No more tormenting each other,” I added.

After saying this, I felt a sense of relief, as if I had shed a heavy burden.

Jaxon’s eyes turned red instantly.

He opened his mouth, seemingly wanting to say something, but then swallowed his words.

He looked at me, his eyes filled with reluctance, pain, and a hint of despair. “Elowen, won’t you give me even a tiny chance? I’ve really changed. I know I was wrong. From now on, I’ll treat you well. I’ll give you everything.”

His voice trembled with a touch of pleading.

I shook my head, my stance firm. “Jaxon, it’s useless. Some things, once they happen, can’t be changed. It’s over between us. No matter what you say now, it won’t change that fact. Let go. It’s better for both of us.”

He fell silent.

Slowly, he sat back down on the sofa, lowered his head, and covered his face with his hands.

The entire room was deathly quiet.

I stood there quietly, not speaking or leaving.

I knew he needed time to accept this reality.

After a long while, he slowly raised his head.

His eyes were swollen.

He took a deep breath, trying to compose himself.
