His Regret Deception And Betrayal novel Chapter 8

Chapter 8

What good would it do to be reluctant to let go?

In the end, Matthew, no, Jaxon, would return to his world of opulence and splendor.

He had made his choice, and it was time for me to let go.

I slowly stood up and looked around.

This small yet cozy rental apartment had been the vessel for our three years of joys and sorrows, a witness to the love we once thought would last forever.

On the wall hung a photo taken during our first visit to the amusement park.

In the picture, he held me high above his head, and I laughed like a child, my eyes sparkling with happiness.

Did he still remember? We stood in line for a long time at a tiny cotton candy stall before we could buy two pink ones.

Elowen, look, doesn’t this look like you?He pointed at a heartshaped cotton candy, his face beaming.

Where does it look like me?I pouted, pretending to be upset.

Everywhere. It’s just as sweet as you.” He pinched my nose affectionately.

I laughed at his teasing and reached for the cotton candy in his hand.

He raised it out of my reach.

No way. This one’s mine,he said, teasing me on purpose.

Stingy,I said, standing on my tiptoes to try and reach it.

Suddenly, he leaned down and lightly kissed my lips. Now, it’s yours,he said, his voice low and gentle, with a hint of playfulness.

My cheeks flushed instantly, and my heart raced as if it would leap out of my chest.

Another time, we went to the movies, and I cried my eyes out during the touching scenes.

He gently pulled me into his arms and wiped away my tears.

Darling, it’s all fake. Don’t cry,he said softly, his voice tinged with concern.

‘I know, but I just can’t help it,I sobbed.

He didn’t say anything more but held me tightly, warming me with his body heat.

His embrace used to be my safest haven.

But now, that haven no longer belonged to me.

I began to pack my things.

In truth, I didn’t have much that was truly mine; one suitcase was enough to hold everything.

I didn’t take any of the expensive gifts he had given me. In fact, I once thought these gifts were cheap trinkets. Now I knew better. How could anything he gave away be inexpensive?

They were too dazzling, too luxurious, out of place in this small apartment and in my life.

I opened the drawer and took out a bank card.

It held our joint savings of 280 thousand dollars.

We had scrimped and saved every penny, originally planning to use it for a down payment on a house.

Now, I would take this money; it was rightfully mine.

I hid the suitcase deep inside the wardrobe, covered by some old clothes.

At noon, Jaxon came back.

As expected, he brought food from that restaurant, all my favorite dishes.

Elowen, come and eat,he called, arranging the dishes on the table.

I’ve already taken the afternoon off. What do you want to do? I’ll be with you.He looked at me, his eyes brimming with anticipation.

I want to go to the amusement park,I said softly.

It was my last wish and my final farewell to this relationship.

The massive crystal chandelier, like a cascading Milky Way, illuminated the entire banquet hall as bright as day.

The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the fragrance of fresh flowers, blending into an intoxicating aura of opulence.

Cathy stood in the corner, holding a glass of champagne, but she had no heart to taste it.

Her eyes were fixed intently on the man on the wedding stage.

Jaxon was dressed in a bespoke black suit, the perfectly tailored fabric accentuating his impeccable physique. A discreet yet luxurious sapphire cufflink adorned his collar, exuding an undeniable air of nobility and elegance.

Yet, there was no trace of the joy a groom should feel on his face.

He halfheartedly interacted with the guests around him, his gaze occasionally drifting toward the entrance, as if he were waiting for someone.

The standards are truly high. No wonder it’s the Gable family; the grandeur is unparalleled.”

Indeed. I heard that only the wedding venue decoration cost over a million dollars. Are those real crystals on the chandelier?

Absolutely. Ms. York is the apple of her family’s eye. Her wedding is naturally of the highest caliber.”

Mr. Gable usually seems quite indifferent, but he seems very attentive to Ms. York.”

You don’t understand. This is a strategic alliance, a business marriage. Do you get it?

Cathy let out a cold laugh.

How blind these people were.

Jaxon stood on the stage, his mind wandering.

Ever since he had taken Elowen to the amusement park, she seemed unchanged upon their return, still as gentle and serene

as ever.
