The Real Legacy Was Heartbreak novel Chapter 8

Chapter 8

At that moment, Raymond was helping Kaylani eat some oatmeal in her hospital room. Out of nowhere, his hand began to tremble, and he accidentally dropped the bowl. The hot oatmeal splashed onto Kaylani’s chest.

She cried out in pain and nearly fell off the bed.

Raymond hurried to grab a tissue and clean her up, looking very regretful.

“I’m really sorry. I didn’t do it on purpose.”

Kaylani stared at the burni Purchase completed est, her eyes tearing up as she said, hurt and upset, “Raymond, it hurts so much. I hope it doesn’t leave a mark.”

Raymond looked at her tearful expression, and all of a sudden, an old memory popped into his head.

He remembered a cold winter years ago. It was not long after his father passed away, and the rest of the family was tearing each other apart over the inheritance. As the illegitimate son, he was pushed aside and had no claim to the inheritance. He had to rely on himself to survive.

He got really sick from working too hard and ended up in the hospital. He had no appetite and hadn’t eaten for three days straight, surviving only on IV fluids. On the fourth day, he mentioned how he craved ravioli from St. Louis. Without hesitating, Valerie took a long taxi

ride, over 200 kilometers, to go get them.

That day, the snow was falling hard, and it was freezing. To keep the ravioli warm, Valerie wrapped them in her clothes right after buying them and used her body heat to keep them hot. By the time she took them out, her chest was red and covered with burns and blisters.

But Valerie didn’t even flinch. She simply handed him the food, smiling like she was giving him something precious, and urged him to eat before it cooled down.

Back then, Raymond was focused only on getting to the top so he could one day marry Kaylani. When he saw her injury, he just asked casually and then forgot about it.

Looking back now, he realized how much pain she must have been in back then.

A wave of guilt washed over Raymond, and he started thinking about visiting Valerie in prison later that day. Maybe if she were willing to admit she was wrong, he’d consider letting her out.

That thought oddly made him look forward to seeing her.

Kaylani noticed the small smile on his face and immediately looked displeased.

“Raymond, how can you be smiling when I’m hurting this much? Don’t you even care about me?”

Snapping out of it, Raymond quickly told a nurse to bring some medicine for her.
