Georgia’s hand moved almost on its own, reaching out to grasp Mason’s as gently as her brother had held her in childhood -an instinctive, protective embrace from years ago.
Mason froze, catching a soft voice whispering in the stillness. “She’d be happy if she knew you loved her.”
Georgia was about to pull away.
Then, without warning, Mason closed the distance, wrapping her in a tight hold. His breath brushed her ear as he murmured, “I’m sorry, Melanie. I love you, Melanie.”
It dawned on Georgia then–both she and the woman Mason adored bore the same scar etched across their foreheads, both had spoken those words. Mason had mistaken her for the woman in his heart.
She longed to soothe him, to offer some comfort, but before she could, a cold, familiar voice cut through from the doorway. “Mason, let her go.”
Her eyes snapped to the entrance, and a chill swept across her face.
There stood Preston, poised and composed. His gaze flicked briefly to Georgia. “Come here.”
Fear rooted Georgia to the spot, her legs trembling with dread. Preston’s commanding presence filled the room like a
winter storm.
His eyes narrowed, voice a blade of ice. “When will you learn to obey?”
Her body shuddered as she hesitated, then began to step toward him.
Suddenly, someone’s grip stopped her.
Mason’s eyes locked with Preston’s, voice laced with defiance. “She doesn’t have time for you right now. Can’t you see we’re having a moment here?”

Georgia felt the surge of Preston’s overwhelming mpira energy press down on her like a suffocating weight.
Preston advanced, his gaze sharp and unforgiving. “How dare you seduce another man? Or would you rather be locked away again?”
To Georgia, the dark wolf prison was a place of unending torment, a spiral of hopelessness.
She shook her head violently, panic flooding her, before her vision blurred and she collapsed.
Both men reached out, striving to catch her at the same instant.
“Get lost!” Preston snarled, slinging an arm around her and swinging a punch at Mason.
Though Mason’s Sapphire Tide Pack couldn’t rival the Dark Spike Pack’s raw power, he was formidable.
He dodged the blow with swift precision.
They each took a step back, sizing each other up.
Preston’s expression hardened; he knew Mason wasn’t looking for a fight. Otherwise, Mason would have shifted already–if they transformed in the cramped room, even Preston would risk injury.
Mason wasn’t one to back down from conflict. He fought, he never fled.
Clearly, his concern was for Georgia.
“Stay away from her.” Preston tightened his hold and headed for the door.
Mason’s voice stopped him just as he reached the threshold. “Enemies though we are, I respect you. So here’s a piece of advice: don’t fight the feelings you have for someone you care about.”
Lowering his gaze, Mason hid the sadness flickering in his eyes.
Preston’s reply was cold and clipped. “That’s none of your business.”
