Catarina’s POV
Something was nagging me to think this through before running again. I had done nothing but run for the past five years. There was no way I was going to keep doing it.
My twins deserved to be safe, but they also deserved to be settled and not have to look over our shoulders all the time.
It was time to stand my ground.
"No, Alex."
He turned around, surprised.
His brows furrowed in confusion as he tried to comprehend the sudden shift in my demeanour. "No? What do you mean?" he asked, his voice tinged with concern.
I took a deep breath, summoning all the strength I had left within me. "I mean that I can't keep running, Alex," I replied firmly, locking eyes with him. "We've been on the run for far too long, and it's taking a toll on all of us. Our children deserve a stable and peaceful life, not one filled with constant fear and uncertainty."
Alex's expression softened as he listened intently, absorbing my words. He reached out and gently grasped my trembling hands, his touch grounding me in the present moment. "Catarina, I understand your concerns," he said softly. "But we've managed to protect our children by staying on the move. It's kept us one step ahead of our past and those who seek to harm us."
My voice grew stronger as I gathered my thoughts. "Staying one step ahead is not enough," I insisted. "We can't truly protect our children if they're always looking over their shoulders, if their lives are constantly uprooted. We need to find a way to confront our past, to put an end to this cycle so we can finally give our family the stability they deserve."
As I made my way down the dimly lit hallway, the familiar expanse of the facility taunted me, reminding me of the secrets that were housed within these walls. My heart raced with trepidation as I contemplated my next move. There was someone I needed to see before I could fully commit to the path I had chosen.
Suddenly, my attention was diverted as I caught sight of Carl, a figure of mystery and intrigue, walking briskly towards the heavily guarded cell block. Intrigued by his actions, I found myself compelled to follow, curiosity fuelling my steps. I kept a safe distance, ensuring that Carl wouldn't spot me, as I observed his nervous glances over his shoulder. The absence of guards on the door piqued my suspicion, hinting at something awry.
My eyebrows furrowed in confusion and concern as I strained my ears to catch any snippets of conversation. The voices grew louder as I continued down the corridor, and a knot formed in my stomach as I recognized the unmistakable tone of Lochlan. Dread washed over me like a tidal wave, threatening to engulf me entirely.
"You have a deal," Lochlan's voice, laced with a chilling combination of confidence and malevolence, echoed through the halls. The words seared into my mind; a confirmation of some nefarious plan being set in motion. My pulse quickened, and a cold sweat coated my palms as the implications sank in. Lochlan's presence filled me with a sickening mixture of anger and fear, as I grappled with the reality that he was still lingering in this unsuspecting place.
Taking a deep breath to steady myself, I leaned against a nearby wall, hidden in the shadows, allowing the significance of the situation to fully sink in. Every fibre of my being screamed at me to intervene, to protect and safeguard those I loved from the clutches of darkness. Determination hardened my resolve as I mulled over my next move. My desire to stand my ground, to reclaim the safety and stability my family deserved, only burned stronger within me.
