Catarina’s POV
I couldn't let this opportunity pass. I needed to find out what Lochlan and Carl were up to, what deal he had made, and how it could affect my plans for my and Alex's life with the Twins. With my heart pounding in my chest.
The air in the cell block was tense, and I could hear the distant murmurs of restless prisoners. As I crept closer, I caught snippets of hushed conversations, whispers of secret alliances and hidden agendas. My mind raced, trying to piece together the puzzle of what was unfolding before me. I knew I had to be careful not to get caught in the crossfire, but I also knew I couldn't stand idly by.
I found a vantage point, a small alcove that allowed me to observe the scene unfolding below. My heart raced as I watched Lochlan, his commanding presence and unsettling smile sending chills down my spine. He stood chained and concentrating fully on Carl. I dared not to breathe, his voice low and persuasive as he outlined a plan. Every word he spoke confirmed my worst fears that he still had a grip on the illusion we would be together again, a family.
That would never happen over my dead body. Carl was wrong to use me as bait for getting what he wanted. He was nothing but a traitor. Alex would be devastated at this news. But I needed to know more about their plan.
My hands clenched into fists as anger surged within me. Bitterness at Lochlan for the pain he had caused, rage at me for ever getting involved with him, and anger at the situation for forcing me to go to such lengths to protect my family. But there was also a fire within me, a determination fuelled by love and the need for justice. My twin's faces made me remain calm enough to stay listening.
I watched as Carl left Lochlan alone and walked away from his cell. I held my breath and prayed that he would not find me. I heard the door clang shut behind him and closed my eyes as I allowed myself to breathe again.
My grip tightened around the metal pipe I had found nearby, my knuckles turning white with determination. I knew that knocking out Carl and retrieving the key was a risky move, but I was ready to do whatever it took to expose the truth.
With careful precision, I approached Carl from behind, remaining as silent as possible. My heart raced with adrenaline as I calculated my next move, my years of training in self-defence coming to the forefront of my mind.
As I neared him, Carl turned slightly, sensing a presence behind him. Before he could react, I swiftly swung the pipe, aiming for a spot above his neck. The pipe connected with a resounding thud, sending a shockwave of force through my arm and into Carl's body.
There was a moment of suspended time as Carl stumbled forward, his expression shifting from arrogance to shock. So then, I seized the opportunity, swiftly moving to snatch the metal key from his grasp. With a determined twist, I wrenched it free, my fingers curling tightly around the cold metal.
Carl's eyes glazed over, and he crumpled to the ground, unconscious. I took a step back, my breath ragged as I realised the gravity of what I had just done. Regret washed over me for a second, but then I pushed it aside, knowing that my actions were necessary for the greater good.
"Hey, what's going on?" one of the guards quickly came running and gasped when he saw me standing over Carls's body. I quickly lunged forward and taking him by surprise, kicked him in the face with my foot and watched as he fell backwards, hitting his head on the hard floor. I wasn't letting anyone stand in my way now!
With the key in my hand, I quickly reached Lochlan's cell, my heart pounding with anticipation and fear.
With shaking hands, I inserted the key into the lock, my heart racing as I turned it. The lock clicking open was like a symphony to my ears.
As Lochlan's cell door swung open, he turned to me. But a fire burned in his eyes as he looked at me for the first time since he had been dragged away.
"Catarina," he drawled, his voice dripping with smugness. "What a pleasant surprise. I didn't expect to see you here. Not this soon! Perhaps you have seen the light and decided you do want me back. You know, be a family."
"You and Tara are welcome to each other! I hate you both, and I hope and pray that you die!" I shouted.
And with that, I slammed the door shut, sure to lock it behind me.
"Catarina!" he called out after me, but I ignored him. He was going to rot in that dirty cell.
Stepping over the guard's unconscious body and that of Carl’s, I kicked him hard in the ribs and hurried to find Alex.
"Find him," Matilda ordered me as soon as I exited the cell block. I knew something was wrong as soon as I couldn't mind linking Alex.
"We will find him, and we will stand our ground," I promised Matilda.
"Going somewhere?" a voice said, causing me to freeze as I entered the packhouse.
David!
