Knight gave the kid back to the Sloane after they took us to a spot in the forest where they stole soil for their weed. Allison said that it would defintely help in their gardens, because it’s the same soil they use to farm with. I don’t buy it, but without any evidence, we can’t be sure about anything. Allison and Roman, who are visiting with Baby, are checking and upgrading the security systent.

“So, are we going to take what she said seriously?” Mr. Knightly asks.

“No,” Knight and I answer at the same time.

“These are the people you’re worried about?” Mr. Knightly asks his son. “I feel like I just talked to a stoned hippie bitch who forgot what she’s protesting for.”

“Hey, that stoned hippie bitch is my grandmother,” I throw a piece of popcorn at him. Ren brought me a snack before we all eat. He grins and lets out a heavy sigh.

“I am glad you got that Rizen mentality and not that one,” he taps his head. Knight laughs and snags the popcorn piece out of my hand.

I look down at the popcorn and can’t stop thinking about the things I can do. She wasn’t telling us the truth. At least, not all of it. Her breathing was calculated and even. Her pulse was neutral, which is unusual because Alphas generally dislike having us around. They hate it even more when the three of us are together.

Fear smells sweet to me. Like peppermint candy, and that’s usually the scent I get off people when the three of us are in a room, even with the betas here. She was hiding something or maybe she was gathering intel on us.

“I would really like for you to think out loud right now,” Knight says. “What’s going on in planet Phoebe?”

“Yes, you have a knack for patterns,” Mr. Knightly agrees.

“She was lying,” I shrug. “There is no way she was as calm as she was with the three of us in the room with her. Others are usually so scared that their scent burns my nose. There’s something dangerous about her that I can’t quite put my claw on. She played her role to the point.”

“You might be giving her too much credit,” Mr. Knightly says.

“I agree with you,” Knight dismisses him. “It took one look at you for her

I can tell Knight doesn’t want to go. What Sloane said sounded crazy. The undead rising, demons scouring the surface world, and the return of the ancient ones? It took everything in me not to laugh then and there.

Mr. Knightly, the grump, cracked a smile and looked away. I thought she was going to say something like the wraiths are back and are teaming up with vampires or something along those lines. It was twenty–twelve all over again.

“Is there food?” Aizen comes out of nowhere and climbs onto the couch beside me. He’s not as awake as she is and leans over to rest his head on my lap. “Why does it smell like wet dog?”

“There was a crazy lady here. You missed it. You would have laughed, and then it would have been acceptable for me to make fun of the old hag,” Mr. Knightly chuckles. Knight doesn’t laugh or try to make eye contact with me, probably afraid I’ll say something.

“If she was that stinky, good,” he grumbles.
