The mood of the whole room dropped again. Despair was obvious in most of our eyes. Askhan looked like a puppy that had been kicked to thereart
I never thought I’d have to see the prince look so dejected. My hands twitched by my side. I couldn’t just stand there and pretend to be chistons to Askhan’s pain. There had to be something I could do.
Without thinking, I made my way over to him. “I’ve never been this sad when I know that I have all of you with me. So don’t he
My hand went to touch his shoulder reassuringly. His eyes lingered on mine for a while before he tightened his grip on it.
“Okay.” He tried to put a smile on his face but I knew what it really meant.
He probably still felt dejected about the whole thing but I knew he would do whatever it took to make me believe otherwise.
I turned to Cyrus whose gaze was trained on the floor. His eyes looked glaze and out of focused. He must have a lot on his mind if he was looking like that.
“You never thought you’d find me, did you?”
This got him to perk up, His eyes held a certain curiosity that made me want to hold him and reassure him till I got to see him smile.
He shook his head, a bitter laugh leaving his lips. “I never thought I would.”
“You didn’t think you’d find me, did you?” I asked, stepping closer to him.
He shook his head again. “Not one bit.”
Without thinking, I reached for his hand and gave it a light squeeze. The smile never left my face as I watched him.
I wanted him to know how grateful I was to have him in life–to have him as a brother and one I could call family.
“Exactly,” I continued, “You didn’t know all these things could be possible yet here we are. You have to hold on to that sliver of faith and believe that anything is possible. Now’s not the time for us to feel sad. We have to believe in Teacher Arthur’s prowess and cling on to that hope that he’ll bring a
solution.”
His eyes glistened as he heard my words. Before I realized it, there was a small smile on his face.
“You’re absolutely right about that. Sorry for being such a sad sack, sis.” Cyrus smiled.
“It’s okay. What matters is how you’re feeling now.” I replied, my gaze travelling to Askhan who was quietly watching the interaction.
There was a smile on his face now. It seemed everyone’s mood had lightened just a little. It felt good to know that I didn’t have to acknowledge the weight of the dampening cloud that seemed to have hung over everyone’s heads just a few minutes ago.
Arthur came up to me and leaned close to my ear. “You’re a born leader, Evelyn. I must commend you for that.”
My eyes flickered to his briefly and I noted the conviction in them. He meant every single word of it too.
“Do you mean it?” I asked, wanting some kind of reassurance that he truly meant his words.
He nodded. “You comfort people so easily and you do it from within your heart. I think the future of Pack Lune would be stronger under your leadership.”
“Thank you.” I said, unable to hold back the grin plastered on my face.
We stayed at the Academy for a little while before Cyrus suggested we head back home. I felt that was a good idea seeing how the exhaustion seemed to be weighing me down.
The ride home was silent save for the low sound of music reverberating through the car. My gaze travelled to the scenes that blurred past us. Eventually, my eyes felt heavy and I leaned my head against the window.
The events of the day burned through my head, some more displeasing than the others. I was so focused on my thoughts that I didn’t realize when we
