Xavier let out a hysterical roar, as if it were the only way he could rationalize everything he had done.

Emily regarded him with cool derision, her gaze unwavering.

Once his outburst finally subsided, Emily drawled, “Do you really think Sofia took you in and even helped cover up your status as illegitimate sons just so you could become her heirs?”

Xavier’s smirk froze on his face. “What are you trying to say?” he demanded.

Xavier thought, ‘I don’t know why, but a sudden sense of dread gripped me!’

Emily looked at him like he was a pathetic clown, her voice dripping with scorn. “Jackson knew from day one that Sofia only brought you back as pawns in her power struggle with James. You were never anything but disposable pieces on her chessboard.

“Once you’re no longer useful as her pawns, you’ll be the first to be cast aside. She might even see you as a stain on the family’s honor, something to be wiped out completely.

“To protect you, Jackson fought tooth and nail to earn Sofia’s approval. Yet in the end, his very efforts became the reason you grew to resent him.”

So, even until his dying breath, Jackson remained fixated on seeking an answer.

Xavier reeled; his face turned ashen. Of course, he knew exactly what Emily was saying. He thought, ‘But what good does knowing do?

‘I can’t stand being that shameful bastard anymore, scorned and cursed wherever I go. I’m sick of being too poor to afford my meds, dragging around this ticking time bomb of a body, just waiting to die.

‘I’m just fighting for myself, just trying to survive. What’s so wrong about that?’

Xavier seemed to have found an unshakeable justification for himself. “So, what if I’m just a pawn? That barren woman can’t have children anyway. Sooner or later, I’ll be the only one she can count on.”

Emily wasn’t surprised by his stubborn delusion. “Do you really think someone like Sofia, with all her power and wealth firmly in her grasp, would willingly entrust the rest of her life to a discarded pawn like you?

“And this discarded pawn? He was ruthless enough to turn on his own twin brother, the one who’d stuck by him. through thick and thin.”

Xavier’s face went deathly pale. Emily’s words left him utterly speechless.

He thought to himself, ‘All these years, Sofia never arranged the heart surgery I needed. Deep down, I’ve always known the truth.

‘But I can’t shake off my dependence on Sofia, so all I can do is pretend I don’t get it. Every choice comes with a price: you win some, you lose some.

‘My brother always let me have my way when we were kids. Guess this time is no different. I’ll just chalk it up to him giving in to me again.
