Chapter 83

Emily looked straight into Gale’s eyes. “I don’t hate the Bennett family, but I want nothing more to do with you. Just the thought of still being one of you makes me sick.”

She feared that if she let herself be fooled by their false kindness again, they would use that same old excuse to send her back to St. Gabriel Reform Academy.

Emily spoke slowly and clearly as if afraid they couldn’t hear her. “So rest assured, Mr. Gale Bennett. I won’t be using the Bennett family name to stir up trouble because I’m never one of you.”

Gale froze, stunned by what Emily said. Staring into her indifferent eyes, he was struck by a memory. Emily once looked at him with those eyes full of admiration and respect.

She used to hold his arm, grinning. “I’m so proud to be your daughter. You’re the best dad in the world.”

And now, she said being part of the Bennett family made her sick. Gale thought, ‘How could she say something like that to me?’

Gale’s anger faded into sorrow. “I loved you from the day you were born, and I tried my best to take good care of you. You messed up and show no regret. How could you turn to accuse us? You’ve truly let me down.”

He trembled, his eyes wet. The mighty businessman of Cloudridge now looked like a broken old man, shaking under the weight of his daughter’s accusation.

Andrew quickly caught him and turned to Emily, saying, “Emily, how could you say something like that to Dad? Apologize. Now.”

“I wasn’t trying to upset him.” Emily remained calm and said flatly, “I’m just telling the truth. Isn’t that what you’ve always wanted?”

They never missed a chance to make her feel like she was the one dragging the Bennett family down. And to them, Lydia was the only one they cared about.

She had once been foolish enough to believe that love could make a family, even without blood. That kind of thinking got her two years of hell. Now she knew better. She wasn’t going to beg to be part of this family anymore.

Andrew tried to say something, but Gale raised his hand and cut in, “Fine, you’re done with this family, huh? Then get the hell out of here and never come back.”

Everyone stared at Gale in shock. After all, even when he kicked Emily out of the house last time, he never said those harsh words.

Andrew was the first to react, quickly stepping in to calm Gale. “Dad, please. Let’s all take a breath. I’m sure Emily didn’t mean it.”

Lucas also panicked. “Dad.” Too scared to say more, he turned to Emily instead. “Emily, don’t be stubborn. Just apologize. Dad is just angry right now, and he didn’t mean it. Apologize and he’ll forgive you.”

Emily glanced at Lucas. She couldn’t even remember the last time he talked to her in such a soft tone. Ever since Lydia returned, everything had changed.
