Emily didn’t want to argue with him anymore. She turned to leave but caught Lydia’s teary eyes. Emily had seen that look countless times and could already guess what was coming.
Just as expected, Lydia ran over with tears in her eyes. “Emily, don’t be mad. Lucas didn’t mean it.”
She stood protectively in front of Lucas. “He just lost his temper and said too much, but he still cares about you. If you’re truly mad, then blame me.”
She looked quietly hurt and patient, while Emily stared at her with no expression, making her look even more helpless.
Lucas, who had just been hesitant, immediately stepped forward, accusing Emily angrily. “You’re a spiteful woman. Lydia has been up all night worrying about you. How dare you blame her?”
Emily looked at Lydia’s flawless skin and perfect makeup. There was no sign she had spent the night awake.
Lydia lowered her head, eyes shimmering with tears. “Lucas, stop. As long as Emily comes back safe, nothing else really matters.”
Lucas sighed, looking deeply sorry for Lydia. “I said she faked the whole kidnapping. Why do you still feel sorry for her?” He glanced at Emily and continued, “See? We didn’t pay those kidnappers a dime, and she’s fine.
“Maybe the reason she was out all night was because her plan was uncovered, and she was too embarrassed to come back. Or maybe she just wanted to make us worry so we would look for her. Anyway, she’s safe and sound, isn’t she?”
The more Lucas thought about it, the more convinced he became that Emily purposely ignored him just now because she felt guilty.
Tears welled up in Lydia’s eyes as she turned to Emily with an innocent look. “Emily, did you really fake the whole kidnapping?”
Lydia looked heartbroken. “How could you do that? I was up all night worried. And do you know how scared Mom and Dad were when they got the news?
“If you are jealous because Mom and Dad care about me, then just bring it all on me. How can you hurt them just to get attention?”
Her gaze was filled with disappointment and reproach as if after endless patience, she had finally reached her limit and refused to hold back any longer.
However, Emily remained utterly composed no matter what Lydia said.
Suddenly, she recalled something. Xavier shouldn’t know all the Bennett family’s numbers, plus the kidnappers had called from an anonymous number. She thought, ‘How did he know this?’
Just as Lucas’s anger flared hotter with Lydia’s words, Emily finally spoke up. “Do you think I faked the whole kidnapping? Fine, let’s call the police and we’ll see.”
