Chapter 78
She said, “Mr. Jenkins, I get what you mean, but you’re the heir of the Jenkins family while I’m just a nobody. We aren’t meant for each other.”
The trust Emily showed under Xavier’s “hero rescue” guise vanished. She said indifferently, “Even if you’re okay with it, your folks definitely won’t be.”
Xavier was caught off guard by the sudden shift in her tone. He thought, ‘Come on, we aren’t dating yet, and she’s already worrying about what my parents would think.
‘Well, it makes sense though. The Bennett family gave up on her. If she didn’t find someone to lean on, she wouldn’t get the ideal life she wanted.’
Xavier’s grin grew softer. “Don’t worry. My parents won’t interfere in my personal affairs.”
He never intended to be with the Bennett family’s adopted daughter who took over her sister’s place. Besides, Lucas was fine with what he was doing, so his parents wouldn’t say a word about it.
Worried that Emily might doubt him, he added, “My parents would definitely like someone as beautiful, kind, and strong as you.”
Emily finally smiled. “Will they? Then when you get the chance, you’ve got to take me to meet your parents.” She needed that chance to ask what they did to Jackson and if they ever regretted it.
Xavier masked disdain in his eyes behind a gentle smile. “Sure. I’ll take you home when the time is right.”
Emily didn’t buy his promise, but since he said it, she figured she would still get the chance to meet them. She didn’t head into the police station. Instead, she asked Xavier to drive her back to the Bennett villa.
No one in the Bennett family gave a damn about her being kidnapped. When Emily arrived home, she ran into Lucas, who was about to head out for a race.
Lucas frowned at her disheveled appearance. “How did you get yourself into this state?”
The Bennett family’s rules were strict, and even Lucas dared not stay out overnight. Yet Emily hadn’t come home all night and looked like such a mess. It was downright disgraceful.
Lucas was just about to voice his accusations when Emily walked right past him without looking as if he didn’t even exist.
Lucas was stunned, but once he registered what had happened, anger flared instantly. “Stop right there.” He grabbed Emily by the wrist and yanked her back. “Why the hell are you snapping at me? You’re the one who stayed out all night.”
Emily frowned, pulling her hand back with impatience. “If you’ve got something to say, spit it out.”
She had made it out of that dilapidated warehouse by sheer willpower, and after staying up all night by Austin’s side, she was totally worn out.
“I was being kind. Why did you treat me so rudely?” Lucas got even angrier.
