Chapter 77

Right after Emily left, Austin, still drowsy, slowly opened his eyes. The unfamiliar surroundings triggered an instinctive reaction. He shot up from the couch, only after a while realizing why he was there.

His tense body gradually relaxed as he looked around, but there was no sign of Emily. On the table lay 60 dollars, which was left for him. It was enough to buy food, or maybe even to get away if that was what he wanted.

Austin picked up the money, and for some reason, he chuckled. He thought, ‘She is so broke that she can’t even get a better place, yet she still left 60 dollars for me, a stranger she only met yesterday. Does she treat everyone so kindly?’

Austin’s grin grew wider. For the first time in his life, he felt that there were still good people in this world.

After leaving the place she had rented, Emily headed straight to the nearest police station. She intended to walk in immediately, but encountered Xavier at the entrance.

Seeing her in such a mess, Xavier hurried over and asked, “Emily, are you okay? I planned to pick you up at the hospital yesterday but ended up witnessing your kidnapping. I chased after them, but those guys were too quick, and I lost track.

“I stayed up all night, looking for you everywhere. Where did they take you?”

He looked worn and weary as if he had been out all night looking for Emily, yet his shoes were strangely spotless.

Emily was no fool, and she knew exactly what was going on. At the graduation party by the pool, Vincent ordered his bodyguards to keep her in the water in front of everyone, yet Xavier managed to rescue her.

The thugs kept bothering her at work, and calling the cops didn’t help, but as soon as Xavier showed up, he drove them away. Now she got kidnapped all confused, and Xavier just happened to witness it and spent the whole night looking for her.

He seriously loved acting like the hero in the TV drama who always saved the girl.

Emily’s lips twitched faintly as she lowered her gaze. She said, “I thought everyone had left me.” Her voice was low and full of helplessness as if Xavier was all she had.

Xavier’s eyes lit up, and he said worriedly, “Why would you think so? Even if the whole world turns its back on you, I’m still here for you.”

He spread his arms to hug her, but Emily stepped back and dodged. She looked him dead in the eyes as if trying to see through him. “Do you mean it?”

“Of course.” Xavier answered firmly, “You’re the best people in the world, and the Bennett family just doesn’t’ deserve you.”

Had Emily been a naive girl who was still dreaming of fairy-tale romances, she might have actually fallen for his tender words and affectionate gaze.

Emily looked down and gave a quiet smile. Only the Bennett family and the kidnappers knew she had been ditched by them. She never brought it up when she was around Xavier.
