Chapter 149
“Grandpa, what’s wrong?” Emily was the first to notice Charles’ discomfort, her voice tight with worry.
Charles was still gasping for breath when Lydia suddenly chimed in with feigned concern, “Emily, please don’t be angry. I was just worried you might make Grandpa miss out on news about Bob, so I kindly reminded you not to misunderstand the
waiter.”
“If I’ve upset you, I sincerely apologize. I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to.” Her eyes brimmed with tears, looking every bit the wronged child forced into an apology.
Vincent immediately held Lydia close and comforted her. “Lydia, this isn’t your fault. You don’t owe Emily any apology.”
“R-really?” Lydia tilted her head up, looking at Vincent with timid, hopeful eyes, her gaze full of adoration and dependence.
Vincent nodded firmly as he wondered, ‘Lydia is just too kind-hearted, and that’s why Emily keeps taking advantage of her. It’s also my fault. I indulged Emily too much in the past, spoiling her into becoming like this.
Lydia coyly lowered her head, though the smug triumph in her eyes was impossible to
conceal.
She looked up again, her face the picture of innocent grievance. In a soft, careful voice, she said to Emily, “You really misunderstood the waiter. He’s not a scammer, I promise.
“I saw just now two police officers talking to that waiter, and then he rushed in here in a frantic hurry to deliver their message. If you don’t believe me, you can go check for yourself. Those two officers should still be waiting outside.”
The Bennett Family had booked out the entire hotel for such a grand party. Naturally, if the police needed to find someone, they would have to inform the hosts first.
Emily’s face paled, but before she could utter a word, Charles, who had been leaning on her for support, suddenly wrenched himself free from her grasp and rushed toward the door.
Sure enough, two police officers stood at the hotel entrance.
Charles staggered but summoned his strength to walk toward them. “A-Are you here

about Bob?”
Charles, a man who had weathered countless storms in his lifetime, now couldn’t even manage a complete sentence.
The two officers had clearly done their research before arriving. They knew exactly who
Charles was.
They produced an official document and stated matter-of-factly, “Two days ago, there was a fatal car accident on the inbound highway. These are the records of the deceased, Bob Carter. We-”
Charles didn’t hear a word the police said. With trembling hands, he opened the file. When he saw the photo confirming it was indeed Bob, the last thread of his composure finally snapped.
Everything went black. Still clutching the file in a death grip, Charles collapsed straight down like a felled tree.
“Grandpa?” Emily, frantic, barely managed to catch Charles as he collapsed. The sheer force sent her crashing to her knees, but she ignored the pain. “Get a doctor, now.”
Fortunately, The Bennett Family had arranged for a private medical team to accompany Charles. The doctors rushed over, administered emergency treatment, and quickly took him to the hospital.
Emily, flustered and frantic, scrambled into the car, determined to accompany Charles to the hospital.
As the car door swung shut, Emily inadvertently caught a glimpse of Lydia nestled in Vincent’s embrace. Lydia curled her lips into a triumphant smirk.
Emily shuddered violently as an icy wave of fury surged up her spine.
‘Lydia has gone too much,’ she wondered, ‘What the hell has Lydia done today? How much is she actually involved in what happened today?’
Despite all the questions swirling in her mind, Emily couldn’t spare a thought right now. Her only concern was Charles’ safety.
With such a dramatic turn of events, the grand party was naturally called off.
Given The Bennett Family’s standing in Cloudridge, none of the guests dared voice any complaints, but all eyes were fixed on the hospital for updates.

Charles held a substantial stake in the Bennett Group. Should anything happen to him,
the company would undoubtedly face major upheaval, and the repercussions would ripple across all of Cloudridge.
Chapter 150
The Bennett Family, fully aware of the public’s intense scrutiny, promptly issued a statement claiming that Charles was out of danger. With great fanfare, they arranged to claim Bob’s remains.
Bob never had children of his own, and to both outsiders and The Bennett Family themselves, he was practically one of them.
Gale personally oversaw Bob’s funeral arrangements, with the media widely covering the story and praising The Bennett Family for their profound benevolence.
