Chapter 148
Just as Emily hesitated for a split second, a waiter suddenly rushed toward Charles in a panic, shouting, “Oh no. Mr. Bennett, something terrible has happened.”
Amidst the joyous celebration, the waiter’s panicked shout instantly drew every eye in the hall.
Gale’s cheerful expression darkened instantly. He snapped, “Who let this tactless waiter in? Where’s your manager? Get him here now.”
The Bennett Family’s party tonight had drawn every prominent figure in Cloudridge. There was no way Gale would allow a mere waiter to embarrass the family in front of such distinguished guests.
The sudden turn of events drew everyone’s curiosity, yet Emily’s heart gave an ominous lurch for reasons she couldn’t explain.
A terrifying wave of foreboding crashed over Emily, threatening to swallow her whole. Without a moment to think, Emily dashed over, trying to stop whatever was about to happen.
But the waiter didn’t give anyone a chance. He shouted at the top of his lungs, “Bob Carter is dead. The very guy whom Mr. Bennett treated like his brother is dead.”
Bang. Charles’ cane clattered to the floor as his legs buckled. He nearly collapsed, but Gale, right behind him, quickly caught him.
But Gale’s face, too, turned pale. Staring at the waiter in disbelief, he stammered, “What did you just say? W-Who did you say died?”
In Gale’s memory, Bob had remained unmarried and childless his whole life, always treating Gale like a son.
Of course, Gale couldn’t believe his ears when he heard such shocking news out of the blue.
Under the intense scrutiny of so many distinguished guests, the waiter’s eyes flickered. Just as he was about to speak again, Emily suddenly lunged forward and shoved him hard.
“Where did this lying charlatan come from? How dare he try to pull a fast one on The Bennett Family?” Emily quickly supported Charles. “Don’t worry, Grandpa. I just spoke

with Bob. He’s just stuck in traffic, and he’ll be here shortly.”
Charles’ face turned pale, his hands gripping Emily’s with uncontrollable trembling. “R- Really?”
Emily didn’t dare show the slightest hesitation. She nodded vigorously. At Charles’ current state, Emily couldn’t possibly tell him the truth.
“Grandpa, let me help you rest first. They’ll handle things here,” she said.
Emily turned to Andrew, who had remained impassively calm nearby, her tone laced with a pointed reminder. “Today is Grandpa’s birthday. It should be a joyous occasion. A planted fraudster like this needs to be dealt with swiftly.”
The Bennett Family members stared at Emily in stunned silence. For a fleeting
moment, it was as if the radiant, vivacious Bennett heiress, whose mere presence could light up a room, had returned.
As The Bennett Family’s most capable heir, Andrew was the first to snap back to reality and immediately caught Emily’s underlying message.
Andrew nodded firmly. “I-”
“Emily, how could you say something like that?” a voice sounded. “Who would ever mChapter 148 ake light of someone’s life?
Lydia swept in from seemingly nowhere, dressed in a fluffy princess gown and clinging to the arm of Vincent, who looked every bit the prince. An entourage followed behind her, making her seem like the true star of tonight’s party.
