Chapter 141
Chapter 141
“Lydia, what you did was wrong,” Lucas said with a frown. “You shouldn’t have gone to Emily and said those things.” Lydia froze; unsure if she was more shocked he thought she was wrong, or just confused about what, exactly, she’d done wrong.
Lucas let out a sigh. “Austin’s not good enough for Emily. If she hadn’t been on bad terms with the family lately, he wouldn’t have had a chance. I’d never approve of them being together. You talking to her like that was overstepping.”
Though he tried to sound calm, the blame in his voice was obvious. Even if Emily had family issues, she was still a Bennett. Someone like Austin, just a good-looking guy with no background, had no right to get close to her.
Lydia was shocked. Not only did he say she was wrong, but also what he said. He used to detest Emily and wanted her out of the Bennett Family. She thought, ‘So what gives him the right to decide who Emily can be with?’
As expected, the Bennett family was arrogant, just in line with their usual behavior. A trace of sarcasm flashed across Lydia’s lips. She lowered her head, putting on a pitiful look as if remorseful. “I didn’t know, Sorry. It won’t happen again.”
Lucas knew his words had hurt Lydia. No matter how upset he was, he couldn’t bring himself to snap at her. “Let it go this time. But if anything like this happens again, talk to the family first instead of making decisions on your
own.”
Although he had decided to stop being angry with Lydia, the matter still wasn’t completely resolved. “All of this began with Emily’s kidnapping. As long as we figure out the truth behind that, everything else will fall into place.”
If it hadn’t been for that kidnapping, none of the chaos that followed would have happened, and Austin wouldn’t have suddenly appeared out of nowhere.
Hearing him suddenly bring up that old event, Lydia tensed up and asked cautiously, “What are you planning to do?”
Lucas never concealed anything from her. He replied seriously, “We might have misjudged Emily before. Perhaps her kidnapping was real. I need to find someone to look into this thoroughly.”
He warned carefully, “Lydia, keep this secret for me. Don’t tell Mom, Dad, or Andrew. Their relationships with Emily have been tense lately. It’s better to wait until we clear things up; this might even help ease the tension.”
Lydia never expected that he would want to look into Emily’s kidnapping again. She thought, ‘Hadn’t all those past events already faded away without any answers?’ Her mouth twitched as she wanted to convince him to abandon the idea.
But she had just dispelled Lucas’s doubts about her. If she said more at this time, it might cause new problems. In the end, Lydia just smiled and expressed her support for his decision.
