Chapter 140

Lydia’s mind raced as she spoke, her voice choked with sobs. “Of everyone in the Bennett family, you’re the one I trust and rely on the most. I never thought you’d be the one to doubt me.”

“Lucas, you’ve truly disappointed me. Maybe I should never have come back in the first place.” She pushed away Lucas’s hand, her heartbroken look deliberately designed to invite pity.

In that instant, all the warring voices in Lucas’s mind vanished, leaving only panic and regret. “It’s my fault, Lydia. Please, don’t be mad. I was misled, I never meant to doubt you,” he stammered.

He reached out again, nervously grasping Lydia’s arm. His face was full of guilt. “It’s all Bob and Austin’s fault. If they hadn’t kept saying those things to me, I would never have started overthinking and doubting you.”

Andrew used to say he was too blunt, too single-minded; he never agreed. But now, he realized he’d just been too naive. Letting a few words shake his trust in Lydia was totally out of line.

He quickly gave himself a light slap on the check, the sound sharp in his panic.

Lucas said, “It’s all my fault. If you’re angry, Lydia, just hit me. But please don’t say you’re disappointed in me or that you shouldn’t have come back. I promise, I’ll never let anyone turn me against you again. Please, don’t be angry, okay?”

Lydia still wore a sulky look, but her hands unconsciously clenched. She thought, ‘Charles and Bob are enough of a headache, and now there’s that unyielding Austin. I must find a way to eliminate one of these nuisances.

Lydia still didn’t pull away from Lucas’s grasp. Her voice was tinged with uncertainty and a hint of hurt as she asked, “Do you really mean it?” Lucas nodded vigorously, his sincerity evident on his face.

Lydia’s aggrieved and indignant expression finally subsided. With a haughty pout, she said, “Fine, I’ll trust you this one time. But if you ever doubt me again, I’ll never forgive you for the rest of my life.”

“Don’t worry. It won’t happen again.” Lucas let out a sigh of relief and hurried to promise.

At that moment, he seemed to have completely forgotten the initial reason for his interrogation of her. All he cared about was keeping Lydia happy and going along with whatever she desired.

Lydia’s tears turned to a smile, as if she believed his promise. She thought, ‘But how could I ever trust Bennetts’

assurances?

‘After all, I’ve seen firsthand how much they once doted on Emily, and how they swore up and down to treat us both the same. Their promises are nothing but empty words-utterly worthless.”

Of course, she kept these thoughts to herself. Instead, she pretended to be touched and said, “I always knew you were the one who treated me best, Lucas. I know you didn’t mean it.”

She added, sounding self-reproachful, “This is all my fault. If I hadn’t sent the bodyguards away and gone to that old neighborhood alone, I wouldn’t have given anyone an opportunity, and you wouldn’t have misunderstood me.
