Chapter 139

Lydia’s understanding smile froze on her face. ‘When did Lucas become smart and start suspecting me?’ Lydia thought, stunned.

Lydia’s lips twitched. However, upon seeing Lucas’s unwavering gaze fixed on her, she quickly suppressed the turmoil within her. Her mind was racing, and a nervous, evasive look flitted across her face.

“I-I was just bored and wanted to go there for a stroll by myself,” she stammered. Even a child could tell that excuse was a lie, especially with that expression on her face.

Lucas’s expression shifted, a wave of anger from feeling betrayed rising inside him. He suddenly grabbed Lydia’s arm tighter without realizing it. “Lydia, you’ve never lied to me before. Tell me the truth; why on earth did you go there?”

Lydia was truly taken aback by his demeanor. This time, it wasn’t an act. Ever since she’d returned to the Bennett family, Lucas had never confronted her like this. He wouldn’t even raise his voice, let alone treat her with such severe suspicion.

Perhaps overwhelmed by emotion, Lucas didn’t notice he was still gripping her shoulders and shaking her violently. “Are you… Did you…

The words were on the tip of his tongue, but he just couldn’t bring himself to say them. Yet if left unspoken, Austin’s words kept echoing in his mind like an inescapable curse.

After a long, agonizing pause, he blurted out, “Did you stage your own kidnapping?”

Lydia stared at him in astonishment, remaining frozen for a long moment. Tears welled up in her eyes, turning them red. Her voice trembling, she whispered, “Lucas, are you doubting me?”

Lucas’s grip on her shoulders slackened, and he couldn’t bring himself to meet her eyes. “I…” he stammered helplessly, the words dying in his throat.

Lydia’s eyes turned even redder. “Yes, I deliberately sent the bodyguards away, and I went to that rundown neighborhood on purpose. But I only did it for Emily.”

Her tears welled up. “Emily has a tense relationship with the family. If you all found out she was living with some guy, it could cause even bigger problems.

“I just wanted to talk some sense into my sister, but she wouldn’t listen. And next thing I know, the kidnappers got me. I always have bodyguards around me, but this one time, right after seeing her, I got…”

She left the rest unsaid, but it was clear she was shifting the blame to Emily. Lucas’s furious, questioning look suddenly froze. Her words involuntarily influenced his mind. He blurted out, “Before you were kidnapped, was Emily the only person you saw?”

Lydia hadn’t only seen Emily before the incident, but that didn’t stop her from nodding earnestly, giving Lucas the answer he expected.

Lucas’s mind turned into a mess, like two completely different voices were fighting in his head. He didn’t want to doubt Lydia, but he couldn’t stop replaying Austin’s words over and over.
