Chapter 137
Lucas felt a tightening in his chest. He had no idea what Austin was about to say, but something told him it was the kind of truth he didn’t want. But just because he didn’t want to hear it didn’t mean Austin wouldn’t say it.
“While this place may not match Bennett Family’s estate, I’d never let Emily go without anything she needs; she deserves nothing but the best,” Austin said sincerely.
“But no matter what kind of furniture I buy, whether it’s good or bad, Emily won’t have any of it. She says that if there’s too much furniture in the room, she’s afraid someone might be hiding there,” Austin explained.
Lucas’s mind reeled. ‘What a chilling irony. Who would ever lie in their own home, constantly worrying that someone might be hiding inside?’ Lucas thought.
Lucas felt a sharp pain in his heart. Having grown up in comfort, he had never known the fear of someone hiding in his home. But the Emily he knew would never be scared of something like that.
Seeing Lucas still standing there, stunned and unresponsive, Austin’s lips curled into a sneer. ‘Looks like he isn’t completely hopeless after all,’ Austin thought with a hint of sarcasm.
Austin leaned against the doorway, arms crossed, and suddenly asked, “Do you even know how I met Emily?” Lucas’s heart skipped a beat. He was too scared to turn around or ask.
Austin paid no heed to Lucas’s inner turmoil and continued coldly, “Emily and I were kidnapped by the same gang. Those merciless bastards were fully capable of killing us. If it weren’t for Emily, my corpse might be rotting somewhere with no one ever knowing.”
Lucas stumbled and hit the door with a loud thud, barely staying upright. He remembered Emily’s kidnapping, and what he’d told the kidnapper. “Dump the body far away so it wouldn’t bring me bad luck.”
“I… I didn’t know,” Lucas stammered, his voice trembling with panic. His face turned deathly pale. Suddenly, he spun around and grabbed Austin’s hand, his body shaking uncontrollably.
“I thought it wasn’t real, that’s why I said those things. I didn’t know…” He sounded desperate, like explaining it out loud was the only way to convince himself, or anyone else, that he wasn’t to blame.
Austin’s lips curled into a cold, mocking smile. His eyes were icy as he looked at Lucas. “Of course you wouldn’t know, because you never trusted her. All you ever gave her was suspicion, disgust, and sheer hatred.”
“You claim you misunderstood Emily? Tell me, if both of them were kidnapped, why didn’t you ever suspect Lydia?” Austin asked, his voice laced with sarcasm.
He added, “Why would she dismiss her bodyguards herself? Why would she show up in that run-down neighborhood? And how conveniently did the kidnappers let her overhear the mastermind behind it all? Have you ever stopped to question any of this?”
Austin spoke slowly, each word dripping with sarcasm. “Perhaps you should start bringing your brain along when you go out.”
Any other time, if someone dared to insult him to his face like that, Lucas would have long since exploded. But now, all he could feel was a gnawing sense of guilt.
