Chapter 129
Though Cale wasn’t a native of Cloudridge, digging up his background was no challenge for someone with Bob’s
resources.
Cale lost his father at age ten and later followed his mother into a remarriage. A lazy, greedy gambler by nature, he was the neighborhood’s notorious asshole.
For someone who’d always been an idle good-for-nothing, it was suspicious when Cale suddenly struck it rich over four years ago. He neither ran a business nor won the lottery, yet a steady sum mysteriously appeared in his account every month.
The account making these transfers to him was the very one the Bennett Family had specifically set up for Lydia. What’s more, the very first transfer coincidentally occurred in Lydia’s first month back with the Bennett Family.
The transfers started at $1,400, then increased to $4,300, $7,100, and finally $14,300. But then, out of the blue, all transfers between Lydia and Cale came to a halt two years ago. And that timing was right after Emily was sent abroad.
With all these coincidences piling up, there was no way Bob would believe it was just chance. He immediately ordered a thorough investigation.
The investigation revealed that every few months, Lydia would withdraw cash from the bank, ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars, sometimes even more.
No one could trace where the money went, but within days, a hefty sum would always find its way to Cale. Some of it went into his bank account, but the rest was either spent or lost at the gambling tables.
Bob, ever meticulous and cautious, had someone scrutinize Cale’s spending records. They discovered that every time Lydia withdrew cash, Cale would subsequently receive the same amount of money.
What’s more, every few months, Cale would call Lydia. All these signs pointed to a dark secret between Cale and Lydia.
Bob immediately pursued this lead, but the trail went cold. Yet, it was as if, beyond these few visible ties, there was nothing else to be found between them. The more things didn’t add up, the more suspicious Bob became.
The Bennett Family, as Cloudridge’s most prestigious family, didn’t just accept anyone who showed up with a paternity test claiming kinship. When Lydia suddenly showed up out of nowhere, the Bennett Family wasted no time ordering a thorough background check on her.
Bob had personally reviewed those investigation results, yet there wasn’t a single clue linking Lydia to Cale. And yet, while the files Bob had on Cale appeared thorough at first glance, he knew the investigation into his family only scratched the surface.
Most people probably wouldn’t have picked up on this at all. But having been through thick and thin with Charles for so many years, Bob certainly wasn’t going to be easily fooled.
These documents seemed to be flawless, but it was a clear sign that someone was deliberately covering something up. It seemed Bob had no choice. He had to go to Cale’s hometown himself to get to the bottom of things.
“Bob?” Emily called out. Emily’s familiar voice suddenly snapped Bob out of his thoughts. He instinctively tucked

away the files in his hand and turned to Emily with a gentle, grandfatherly smile, unaware of when she had entered.
