Chapter 69

Tristan’s POV

Alpha, you can’t just stand here all night. You need rest and clean clothes. Dr. Rylan assured us she’s

stable.

I ignored Varian, keeping my eyes fixed on the closed door of the treatment room.

Varian raised an eyebrow. Since when do you care about her wellbeing?

My wolf stirred beneath my skin, agitated and defensive. I don’t want her dying in my territory. Bad optics.

Right.Varian’s mouth twitched. The mighty Alpha was just concerned about optics when he crashed his custom car to save her. Nothing to do with the fact that you haven’t taken your eyes off that door since we arrived.

I turned to face him fully, letting my irritation show.

Look at you.His voice dropped lower. Our icecold Alpha finally shows a crack. Is she that important?

The question hung between us. I didn’t answerwhich somehow felt more revealing than any denial.

My wolf paced inside me, unsettled and restless. Why had I reacted so strongly?

Fine,I conceded. I’ll return to the penthouse to change. Briefly.

A wise choice.

I took one last look at the treatment room door. I’ll be back within the hour. If anything changes

You’ll know immediately,Varian promised.

As we walked toward the exit, I stopped short. My parents are in the west wing. Don’t tell my

mother about the accident. She’s worried enough about my father.

Varian nodded, surprise flashing across his face before he masked it.

The car slid through rainslicked streets, tires hissing against wet asphalt. City lights blurred outside the window, smears of neon in the darkness. My hands still smelled of her blood despite the

bandages.

I couldn’t shake the image of Lysandra tumbling from that car, the glass in her hair catching the moonlight like tiny stars. The way her body felt in my armstoo light, too fragile. The relief that had crashed through me when her eyes opened and focused on mine.

I’ve never seen you like that before,Varian said, breaking the silence. His eyes remained fixed on the road ahead. In the hospital. You looked ready to tear apart any doctor who touched her wrong.

I flexed my fingers, the cuts beneath the bandages stinging. Residual mate bond. Nothing more.

Even as I said it, I questioned my own actions. Why had I risked my life? Why had I sacrificed my custom Alphamarked Mercedesa car worth more than most pack members would earn in a decade -without a second thought?

If you say so.Varian’s tone remained neutral, but I caught the skepticism. Though I never thought I’d see our heartless Alpha’s pulse race for anyone.

I shot him a look but couldn’t summon a proper retort. The truth hung between us, unacknowledged: my father’s weakened wolf hadn’t affected me nearly as much as seeing Lysandra’s car teetering at

the edge of that cliff.

Selene stood by the entrance to my building, her golden hair catching the security lights. Shit. Just

what I needed.

As I approached, her eyes widened at the sight of my bandaged hands and the cut on my forehead.

What are you doing here?I kept my voice flat.

Oh my God, what happened to you?She reached toward my injuries, shock written across her face.

Nothing.I pushed past her, swiping my keycard and entering without looking back.

Her heels clicked rapidly behind me as she hurried to keep pace. Once inside my penthouse, she grabbed my arm.

You never tell me anything, she said, voice tight with indignation. Why do you treat me this way? I’m your fiancée. I deserve to know what’s going on.

I sank onto the leather sofa, suddenly aware of the bonedeep exhaustion. How did you know I’d be

here?

I went to the hospital to see Fenris. She stood before me, arms crossed. Isolde said you hadn’t been staying at Moon Sanctuary lately, so I figured you’d be here. What’s happened?

Hmm.I stared past her at the city skyline.

The penthouse felt strangely empty. Clinical. None of the warmth I’d felt at Moon Sanctuary when Lysandra was there.

Selene moved closer, eyes catching on the dark stain on my shirt. She reached toward my chest with exaggerated concern. Are you hurt? Let me see-

I caught her wrist before she could touch me. What are you doing?

You’re injured! Her eyes widened with theatrical fear. I’m trying to help.

I released her hand, pushing it away. She let out a small hiss, cradling her right wrist as if my touch had hurt her.

My gaze dropped to the burn mark there. For some reason, it triggered thoughts of Lysandra’s curved scar. Was there something I was missing?

Why are you here?I asked, looking away. If you need something, I told you to contact my

secretary.

So you think I only come here to get something from you?Her voice rose. I care about you!

I stood, needing to end this conversation. It’s late. Go home. We can talk tomorrow.

I turned toward my bedroom, but Selene lunged forward, grabbing my arm. Her nails dug slightly into my skin.

Why are you avoiding me? You’ve been like this ever since that woman came back.

I looked down at her hand, then back to her face.

You saw how she nearly broke my wrist,Selene continued. You said you would handle her. Why haven’t you punished her yet?
