Phoebe was filled with guilt. Scorpion had set his sights on her. Even if he had not caused an accident on Declan’s way to city hall, he would have found another way to hurt him.
“Mrs. Richardson, Mr. Richardson will be fine, I promise. Phoebe was determined to keep him safe.
After comforting Audrey and arranging for someone to take her home, Phoebe returned to the hospital room and stood guard at the door.
Before long, Jennifer arrived after receiving the news.
Her eyes were filled with tears as she stared coldly at Phoebe. “I heard Deck got into a car accident on his way to city hall for the divorce. Phoebe, you always bring bad luck. Anyone who gets involved with you ends up in trouble.”
Phoebe let out a cold laugh and said each word clearly. “What does this have to do with you? Do not forget that Declan and I are not divorced yet. It is not your place, as a mistress, to point fingers at me.”
Jennifer was so furious she could not speak.
After a moment of silence, she spoke with disgust. “I will stay here and watch over Deck. You can get lost now
“The one who should leave is you, Jennifer. I have not even confronted you about the stables yet. If you keep buzzing around me like a fly, I will not mind dealing with you right now. Declan is unconscious. After all, there is no one here to back you up.” Phoebe said.
Jennifer pointed at her and gritted her teeth. “So this is the real you. All that gentle and understanding act was just a facade.”
“Being gentle and understanding is for people who treat me well. Do you think you deserve it?” Phoebe shot back.
“Just you wait,” Jennifer snapped.
After she drove Jennifer away, the world finally quieted down.
If it were not for the fear that Scorpion’s people would come after Declan again, Phoebe would have left the moment Jennifer offered to stay with him.
Besides, Declan’s leg was a real problem. She could not let him spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair.
After hesitating for a long time, Phoebe finally dialed a number she had not dared to call in three years.
Just before the call was about to go to voicemail, the other end picked up. A mocking voice came through. “Oh? You still remember me? Any later, and you could have attended my funeral instead.”
Phoebe bit her lower lip. “Mr. Walker, I-”
Hearing her hesitation, Colton Walker sounded displeased. “You are calling me about Declan again, aren’t you?”
“Yes,” Phoebe admitted.
Colton was silent for a long time before sighing, “Let’s put that aside for now. Is he good to you?”
“He’s pretty good,” Phoebe said.
The moment she finished speaking, Colton let out a cold laugh. “Damn it. I may live in the middle of nowhere, but I am not ill–informed. If he was really good to you, you would have brought him to see me already.”
Phoebe pressed her lips together. She had not expected Colton to be so sharp. The way he saw through her made her feel

embarrassed. “Mr. Walker, do you have to make this so awkward for me?

“Make it awkward for you? Three years ago, I told you that if you were ever wronged, you could come back anytime. And what did you do? Are you trying to anger me to death? Colton snapped.
Phoebe was momentarily stunned. She thought to herself, Mr. Walker is always buried in his research. It must have heen Yann who told on me. Otherwise, how could he possibly know about me and Declan? –
“You are probably thinking about settling the score with Yann now, aren’t you?” Colton said.
“I am not.” Phoebe replied.
Colton said, “Still lying to me? Do you think I do not know you? Yann has not been back in three years. Next time, bring him back with you, along with Declan. I want to see just how amazing he is to have tricked you so thoroughly.”
Phoebe nodded. “Alright.”
“That’s all, then.” Colton hung up.
