“I don’t know…” Phoebe replied. Her face was flushed, and she felt hot all over as beads of sweat formed on her forehead.
Declan gripped her chin and said seriously, “Look closely. Who am I?”
The sharp pain from his grip jolted Phoebe awake for a moment. She struggled to open her eyes and mumbled, “Declan…”
Declan lowered his head and captured her lips in a kiss that quickly grew passionate, his strong hands wrapped tightly around her waist.
Phoebe felt as if she was being roasted over fire one moment and plunged into icy waters the next. The night was far from
over.
When she woke again, a deep soreness spread through her body, making her involuntarily let out a soft whimper.
Her eyes snapped open, and when she saw Declan’s face up close, she realized that last night wasn’t a dream. Rubbing her throbbing temples, she felt an even bigger headache coming on.
Her movement stirred Declan beside her. Their gazes met, and neither of them spoke.
Phoebe pressed her lips together. She was about to break the silence when she realized her throat was hoarse. The memories of last night’s intense intimacy came rushing back, and she unconsciously clenched her hands at her sides.
After a moment, she said softly, “Let’s just pretend last night never happened.”
They were about to get divorced. She didn’t want to make things more complicated, nor did she want Declan to think she would use this as a pretext to remain by his side.
Annoyed, Declan narrowed his eyes and asked, “What do you mean by that?!”
Phoebe frowned slightly and replied, her gaze fixed on his face, “We’re both adults. It was just an accident. Don’t worry; I don’t need anything from you.”
Declan was even angrier and asked, “Should I be thanking you for being so considerate?” He had thought last night might ease the tension between them. It turned out he was the only one thinking that.
Phoebe didn’t respond, thinking it was unreasonable of him to be angry when she had already said she didn’t need anything from him.
The atmosphere turned tense. Then, Declan suddenly said, “I saved you last night. It only happened because you needed my help. Don’t you think it’s only fair to return the favor?”
Phoebe stared at him in disbelief and snapped, “You took advantage of me, and now you expect me to repay you?!”
“Who kept asking for more last night? Do you need me to remind you?” Declan asked.
Embarrassment flashed across Phoebe’s face, and her cheeks flushed. Even though her mind was hazy last night, she still remembered some things. The moment those memories surfaced, her face started to heat up.
As she fell silent, Declan’s foul mood improved slightly. “Seems like you haven’t forgotten after all,” he said.
Phoebe clenched her teeth and glared at him. “What do you want?”
From now on, don’t ever mention divorce in front of me again!” Declan replied.
“That’s impossible. Phoebe’s expression turned cold, and her gaze sharpened.

She added, “Declan, if you want to stay married while messing around with other women, that’s your business. But I’m not getting dragged into the mess between you and Jennifer. Last night, if it hadn’t been you, it would’ve been someone else!
Her words ignited Declan’s fury. He grabbed her wrist and pushed her down beneath him. “Say that again”
Their bodies pressed tightly together. Phoebe’s face flushed red, and it was unclear whether it was from anger of embarrassment. “Let me go!” she demanded.
Declan lowered his head, biting her lips sharply. As she gasped in pain, he said coldly, “Now that you’ve been with me, don’t even think about being with another man. Divorce? Over my dead body.”
Phoebe stared at him with resentful eyes. “Are you forcing me to kill you?”
Declan raised an eyebrow and said, “Go ahead if you think you can.” With that, he released her and got up.
