Jennifer didn’t push further. She simply smiled and said, “You’ll understand soon enough. Let’s just focus on picking a dress. Didn’t you have your eye on a few others?”

“Well, since it isn’t for sale, you’ll just have to settle for the next best thing.

Meanwhile, Phoebe had just hung up the phone when Cora gave her a curious look. “Something up with Miracle Youth?”

Phoebe sighed, a trace of exasperation in her tone. “That dress I designed for your birthday was accidentally put on display by a new employee, and someone wants to buy it.”

Cora’s brows lifted, intrigued. “Oh? What kind of dress is it? I’m going to the party tonight. Why don’t you tell Marlyn to send it over? I can just wear it tonight.”

“There’s still half a month until your birthday. I’m not gonna reveal the surprise for you earlier.” Phoebe said flatly. “Now, get back to work. I’ve got documents to review.”

Cora tried to wheedle Pheobe into agreeing, but when she got nowhere, she reluctantly gave up and returned to her tasks.

Later, just before finishing up at work, Phoebe received a call from Declan. “I’m outside Miracle Youth. When are you getting off?”

As soon as she stepped out of the building, she spotted the sleek black Maybach parked by the curb. She walked over, opened the door, and slid into the passenger seat, only to be met with an icy chill that seemed to fill the entire car.

Declan didn’t even glance up from the file in his hands and ordered the driver, “Get going.”

The ride to Greene Estate was silent. Just as they neared the entrance, Phoebe turned to him and asked, “If anyone asks why I arrived with you, just say Jennifer asked you to pick me up.”

Declan shot her a cold glance and asked, “Am I such an embarrassment to you?”

Phoebe’s voice was calm. “We’ve been in a hidden marriage for three years. We’re about to get divorced, so no point letting people know we were ever married.”

Declan let out a mocking laugh. His tone was sharp, laced with sarcasm. “Don’t want it ruining your chances of finding someone new?”

Pheobe reached for the door handle, ready to get out, but before she could, Declan’s hand shot out, grabbing her wrist and yanking her backward. Caught off guard, she fell straight into his embrace.

Phoebe’s frown deepened as she pressed a hand against his chest to push him away, but his voice, cold and dangerously low, cut through the air. “Phoebe, you’re really testing my patience.”

Chapter 30

Outside the car, the Greenes had already gathered at the entrance upon hearing Declan had arrived. George stood at the front, his face beaming with pride.

Declan attending his birthday party was a huge deal, which gave the Greene family prestige and made them look even more influential in front of their guests. It was also the perfect opportunity to remind those looking to take advantage of their family of their place.

Olivia, standing beside George, was equally pleased with herself. She believed that if it weren’t for Jennifer, Declan wouldn’t have bothered coming. She gave all the credit to her wonderful daughter.

However, as the minutes ticked by, the excitement in the air started to shift into confusion. Declan’s car had been parked there for a while, yet he still hadn’t stepped out.

The guests, noticing the commotion, followed them to the entrance and began whispering amongst themselves.

A middle–aged woman said, “What’s going on? Did Mr. Richardson not actually come?”

Another younger lady added, “I’m starting to think maybe the Greene family did something to offend him. Maybe he’s refusing to get out on purpose.”

Someone else chimed in, “Didn’t they say Mr. Richardson likes Jennifer? Even if the Greene family upset him, wouldn’t Jennifer be able to smooth things over? Unless they had a fight, and now he’s waiting for her to coax him?”

The murmurs of speculation reached the Greenes, making George’s expression stiffen slightly. He turned to Jennifer and said, “Jennie, go and personally greet Declan and get him out of the car.”
