The gentle and soft–spoken Phoebe he knew had never been this sharp. He couldn’t tell if she was truly pushed to her limits, or if she had always been this way, just hiding it well.
Phoebe glanced at the time and said in a cool tone, “I have work tomorrow. If you’ve got nothing else, I’m leaving.” Without waiting to see Declan’s reaction, she turned to go.
“Wait.” Declan blocked her path and demanded, “Since when did you get a job?”
“What’s it to you?” she shot back.
Declan struggled to keep his anger in check and replied through gritted teeth, “Don’t forget I’m still your legitimate husband.”
Phoebe looked indifferent. “You’ll soon not be.”
“Phoebe Richardson, I’m losing my patience,” Declan said with a glare.
Finding his frustration amusing, Phoebe suggested, “You can just divorce me, and you don’t have to deal with it.”
“I told you, I’m not agreeing to a divorce.”
“Fine, put up with it.”
Declan didn’t say a word anymore but just stared into her eyes with immense threat.
Just as the tension between them hit a freezing point, a gentle voice sounded. “Hey, why don’t you guys talk inside?”
Phoebe turned around and saw Marcus standing not far away from them, and her expression looked a bit more friendly.
Marcus was a friend of Declan’s who had always been kind to her, especially during the times Declan was injured. Marcus used to visit Declan at home, and he was gentle, so Phoebe would talk to him sometimes, and she had a good impression of
Marcus.
She softened her tone a bit and replied with a smile, “You guys enjoy yourselves. I’m leaving.”
With Marcus there, Declan didn’t stop her anymore. Once she was gone, Declan turned to Marcus with a chilly look. “What are you doing out here?”
“Just heading to the restroom when I saw you two arguing. I didn’t want it to escalate.” Marcus paused for a second and added, “You know, man, Phoebe really stood by you when you were injured. Even if you don’t love her, you could at least be
nicer.”
Declan’s eyes frosted over. “I know what I’m doing. I’ve got stuff to handle tonight, so I won’t be joining you inside. Tell Scott and Luke I’m leaving. Everything tonight is on me. Have fun.”
After Declan left, Marcus stood there for a moment, smoking a cigarette before heading back inside.
Phoebe and Cora were no longer in their mood after the mess, so they decided to leave the bar.
After calling a ride for Cora, Phoebe waited by the roadside for an Uber while distractedly planning to start driving herself
to work.
Suddenly, a black Maybach pulled up beside her. Thinking it was her cab, she got in without a second glance.
She only realized something was wrong when she recognized the familiar woody scent.

Chapter 10
Turning to find Declan next to her, she frowned and immediately tried to get out. It had been too dark for her to notice someone was already in the backseat when she got in.
However, Declan grabbed her wrist and said to the driver, “Go to Grandview Villa.”
As the car started, Phoebe looked at him coldly and demanded, “Can you let go of my hand now?”
Annoyed at her own carelessness for getting into this situation, she mentally cursed herself. If she hadn’t been distracted, she wouldn’t have gotten into his car.
“Peter, lock the doors,” Declan ordered again, fearing Phoebe would jump out.
Hearing a click and knowing the doors were locked, Declan finally released her hand.
Phoebe kept her tone as even as possible. “Declan, I really do have to work tomorrow. I don’t have time for your antics.”
Declan frowned, his tone icy. “I’ve been drinking. You’re taking care of me tonight.”
Phoebe’s irritation was palpable, and she replied, “Why don’t you call Jennifer? She’d probably love to take care of you.”
She emphasized “take care of” heavily, certain Declan would catch her drift.
Declan scoffed. “Heh, you’re being generous. Just who is my wife here, you or Jennifer?”
