She gestured ahead. “After you.”

Alexander shot her a quizzical look. “Shy?”

Danielle raised her eyebrows. “Excuse me?”

She looked up slowly, meeting Alexander’s gaze with a steady tone. “No, I just find it unlucky.”

She almost said outright: I feel unlucky doing anything with you.

Alexander fell silent for a moment, then looked her over. In the end, he said nothing and stepped back, letting her go ahead on her own.

When Danielle returned to her seat, Gian leaned over. “What’s with Alexander tonight? Can you make any sense of his behavior?”

“A family like the Davidsons cares most about their image and integrity,” she went on. “Even Bianca stood up to clear my name.”

She knew exactly why all these people were suddenly coming forward—it wasn’t just for her sake.
