I hear Knightly’s voice coming from inside his room and he sounds a little calmer than he had before

The words smack me in the face and I take a step back before spinning around and heading back to the room.

“Phoebe,” I glance back to see Elliot standing there with several gift boxes in his arms.

There’s a quick shuffle and a couple of growls before it’s quiet. I take a deep breath and go over to the loveseat where ! placed the kid’s gifts. It’s hard to place myself in his shoes. I’ve always been good at climbing out of the holes I dig for myself.

The hardest one was getting the hell off the reservation. Not because I hated being there. I didn’t. I just hated my house Everything after that was all on me, I made choices and they ultimately led me here and it’s starting to feel like I’m caged in again. We both are. I reach for the notebooks and books Tessa let me borrow from her high school days. I had wanted Knight to go through some of this with me so he could explain it better to me but I don’t think I’m ever going to forget that he said that to one of his friends and by the sound of it, they’re very close.

I groan annoyed when someone taps on the door. I open it and it annoys me more that my stomach twists when i see Knightly standing there.

“What?” I ask holding the door so he knows he’s not welcome at the moment.

“Umm-” he hums blinking away confused. I stare back at him waiting for him to get his words in order. “Did I do something to offend you?”

“What do you need, Knight?” I ask.

“I have to go away for a couple of days. Work–related shit.be back Sunday night so I don’t miss the twins‘ first day of school,

“Great,” I nod. Yes, great. I don’t have to pretend my eavesdropping tendencies have gotten my feelings hurt once again.

“It feels like you’re really mad at me,” he says quietly.

“I heard you,” I admit because I don’t think I can sit here a couple of days stewing over this shit. “Im not a damsel. I was perfectly fine before I met you and thereafter. It wouldn’t do shit to me if you decided to leave for your work–related shit and never come back,”

He stands there stunned but he doesn’t try to tell me that it was a misunderstanding or scold me for eavesdropping. So I take a step back and shut the door. His hand stops it just before it closes on him, I don’t try to keep him from forcing it back open. It would make enough noise to wake up the twins.

“Is that right?” he growls.

The darkness in his eyes bleeds in and for the first time, I feel scared. His hand shoots out and he grips my face. With his other, he wraps his arm around my waist and pulls me out of the room in one lightning–fast motion

“Knight” I mumble into his hand, but I don’t think it’s Knight looking back at me.

“Let’s take care of that, Angel” he leans in takir Successfully unlocked! to need me and only me.”

His grip on my face tightens. Fear overwhelms he animo make my body move. Ice–cold pain floods my body on my left side. I scream into his hand when the sound of his teeth piercing my flesh crunches in my ear. The pain snaps me out of it and shove him as hard as I can. It’s all it takes for him to let go.

I immediately reach for my shoulder and feel the warmth bleeding out of me. I hold my hand out to see it dripping red. I

look up to see Knight on the floor about eight feet away from me looking back at me as panicked as I feet. My blood is dripping out of his mouth onto the graphic t–shirt he’s weating.
