From Rougue To Luna novel Chapter 42

I slowly placed the blade to my skin, cutting into my wrist when her eyes opened wide. "Hurry mommy. Hurry someone's coming. We won't be able to play together!" She said urgently but it was too late.

I felt a harsh jolt and then she was gone. Energy surged through my body and I blinked furiously, trying to bring her back but she was gone. White hot heat pushed through my chest, filling my veins as the room faded away. I was floating, floating in darkness. Where was I?

Another jolt and the darkness became lighter, slowly taking shape and blurring until a hospital room came into my vision. I was gasping for air as a pair of worried kind eyes stared over me, her hands holding two paddles out in front of her, hovering over my chest.

"Thank God. You're alive. You're ok." She said as she breathed hard. "I almost lost you."

I looked down at my wrist to see a bloodied bandage wrapped securely around it. "What..." I croaked.

"I found you in our stock room with a scalpel on your wrist. You cut into it but I got you stitched quick enough that I don't think there will be much damage. You have lost a lot of blood miss. You need to sleep." Her voice was tight with worry but her hands were steady.

"Where'd she go? She needs me. I can't leave her alone." I breathed before fading into darkness. I was so close.

My eyes fluttered open, my heart pounding hard in my chest. I'd kicked the covers off and soaked through the clothes I was wearing. My body was completely drenched.

"Lili, are you ok?" Rhett was standing just in front of the door, his hand still lingering on the knob. He moved slowly to sit beside me on the bed, as if he was afraid to startle me. His hand twitched as it lingered beside mine, aching to touch me, to comfort me.

I let out a breath and sank further back into my pillow, staring up at the ceiling as the memory of my dream slowly began to fade, leaving an aching emptiness inside of my chest. "I...Yes. I'm fine Rhett."

His gaze snapped to meet mine and I could see the surprise in his eyes, but he quickly wiped it away, leaving behind a neutral expression. "I haven't seen anything yet. We've been watching him for days, but so far we've got nothing."

We sat silently for a moment, the energy slowly charging around us as my mind began to race. "The list is fairly short of people he could have. I can only think of one. Avery." I said quietly, leaning over to my nightstand and pulling the drawer open.

I handed him a photo that I'd stashed inside. It was a photo of Avery standing beside me at the bar, her arm draped around me as she pulled me closer. We both had huge smiles on our faces, as if we didn't have a care in the world. My eyes were closed as I was laughed. Her blonde hair was falling just in front of her face as she leaned toward me beaming.

"This is the only person I can think of that he could have taken. There's no one else." I said, the last words falling quietly out of my mouth.

Rhett's eyes slowly slid from the photo to my, taking in my disheveled hair and sweat sheened skin as I leaned back onto my hand. He looked around the bed and as his eyes rose, they fell on the thin jagged line tattooed onto my ribcage just below my sports bra. My hand jumped to cover it in reflex, but his face said he had already seen it. His expression was one of sadness, and of something else mixed in. Guilt?
