"Good Luna. Come on, we've got to do it again. Give me another good push ok? Come on!"
I tried to catch my breath and braced myself, feeling the girls pushing with me as I forced my body to shove once more, letting out a shrieking scream of pain as I once against lost my breath and collapsed back against the girls.
"You're doing so great Lili. Asher just linked me. They're on their way. They're coming. You can do this ok? Do it for Rhett." Ivy said firmly as she squeezed my shoulder.
My heart swelled and I felt my body finally ready for one more push. I could do this. I could do this for him. I'd deliver this child safely. Our child. I braced myself and pushed one more good time, feeling a shooting pain course through me followed by a sudden release as the healer pulled the baby the rest of the way out. I released a hard breath as I fell back against the girls as they moved over to give me room to lie back against the bed.
I could feel my vision blurring as I strained to hear the sweet cries of my son. I'd not been given that chance before, and I had no intention of missing it this time. After what felt like an eternity, I finally heard the broken cries of a sweet newborn, drifting through the air like a melody I'd longed to hear.
"Is he ok?" I asked, my voice weak with exhaustion.
"He is my Luna. You did so well, but you're losing blood quickly, so we're going to get him cleaned while we take care of you. I need you to focus ok? Focus on keeping your eyes open and your lungs breathing. Can you do that for me?" The healer's words were tight and I could hear the underlying note of thick concern as she spoke.
I nodded woodenly and I felt a hand grip my arm, jostling me some as my eyes lazily opened. "Lily, hold on. You have to stay awake. Talk to me babe." Ivy said firmly.
"I wish...Rhett...was here." I said in short breaths as my head lolled to the side.
"Lily, keep your eyes on me. Open your eyes. Do you hear me?" Ivy said louder as she shook me again.
