I shook my head and pinched between my brows. "I'll be fine. I just need a minute or two. Could you please let them know that I'll be there in just a minute. I just want to freshen up for a moment and then I'll come down to the meeting. I need to get my head straight."
Weston hesitated for a moment and then nodded shortly before walking out. I waited until his footsteps faded before letting out another shaky breath. What was happening today? I went from nearly accepting Rhett as my given mate to facing my worst nightmare in the flesh, here where I was supposed to be safe, to finally being offered to have a mate in Weston. I couldn't wait to get this day over with and start again tomorrow. Maybe I'd wake up and it would have all been a horrible dream.
I walked out of the dark meeting room and into the nearby bathroom, wincing at my appearance as I saw my reflection. My eyes were red and puffy and my mascara had streaked beneath my eyes. My nose was red and my skin was blotchy. I splashed cold water on my face and wiped away the streaked mascara beneath my eyes. I took a breath and nodded. It was as good as it was going to get. I unlocked the door and walked out, heading down the hall before coming to the door of the pack's meeting room. I took a deep breath and tried to reign in my anxious heart as I opened the door and slipped in, sitting down in the aisle seat on the last row. Rhett's eyes snapped to mine before quickly flashing away, his jaw clenching tightly. He stood and spoke to the crowd, his voice booming in authority. "Quiet. We will begin now."
The friendly chatter silenced immediately as he stood and walked forward to the front of the table. Seated behind him were Asher, Weston, and the other wolves who'd come to back them up at his office. I huffed to myself, upset that they were now privy to part of the darkness I'd try to keep from following me here.
"As I'm sure many of you know, we have a new she-wolf here with us. She is requesting to join the pack and I want her to come up and say a few words to you before we vote. Lili?"
I stepped away from the center and looked out at the rows and rows of pack members watching as Rhett stepped back to face them in the center of the front of the room. "Lili, if you would please wait outside, we will discuss and be out to get you shortly."
I nodded shortly and gave everyone a quick smile before making my way down the aisle and out of the large wooden doors. I took a deep breath as I slumped down into a chair outside of the door and waited. After several minutes, I realized I could not hear a single sound coming from inside. It had been sound proofed for pack matters to be held within the walls around them.
