After Veronica left, I felt an unbearable sting. The regret began to eat me up. I started hating myself for my horrible actions.
I knew this was the result of my actions and to save whatever I could, I decided to meet Sam so I could convince him to take back the case at least.
“I would like to meet Sam.”
“Sir is not present but he will be here soon.”
I sat for a few minutes but there was no sign of Sam, “Excuse me, can I go to the restroom?”
“Sure.”
I was following a maid to leave for the bathroom until I heard a whimpering coming from a room. Stopping in my tracks, I was astounded to wonder who was sobbing with muffled sounds.
“What is that-”
“Nothing.”
The maid shook her head in dread, narrowing my eyes, I was intrigued to see who it was and gave her some money.
“Let me see.” I demanded.
She gulped, nodding slowly and led me near the room. Bewildered, the second I opened the room, I saw Dariel’s sister tied on the bed with her tears smeared across her cheeks and a covered mouth.
“Jacey…?”
Gasping, I didn’t know how to react. I had no idea what the hell was happening or why she was tied so horribly like this.
“Mhm!”
“Oh Lord, Jacey!?” Rushing to her side, I hastily removed the tape on her mouth.
Perturbed, I gave her some water, “You are… Jared, aren't you?” She asked breathlessly.
“Yes. What is happening?”
“Please help me. Sam, that bastard h-had locked me here. He is after Dariel and Saafia’s life. He- He is working for someone. You have to help them…” She ended up sobbing, lowering her head in anguish as I kept immense pity but then everything slowly began to make sense.
“And you?”
“This is the result of my blind trust in him… I am paying for my actions.” She smiled sorrowfully, lowering the gaze in shame, the same amount of regret I had been holding inside me.
We both were regretting trusting the same person.
“Trusting someone is not a sin, here, let me open.” I whispered, bringing my hand to release her bruised wrist but she shook her head in pure horror.
“No! If you open it, he will know and then…” Lowering her eyes, she stopped them around her calf where I noticed a burned mark.
My jaw dropped, inexplicable compassion evoked in me to see how badly he was hurting her and for what? On someone’s orders?
“Oh Lord, he is even hitting you?” I whispered, bringing my hand to touch her burn stopped, my fingers were shaking.
I couldn’t fathom people like him exist in this world too who didn’t think twice before agonzing a soul and overwhelmed with grief, she ended up sobbing.
“Don’t worry, I will do something and get you out of this hell hole.” I whispered sincerely, feeling bad.
“Why… would you help me?” She asked sorrowfully, forcing her cries to stop.
Glancing at her, I grabbed a tissue and wiped the gleaming tears on her cheek with a sincere smile.
“For the sake of humanity. I have guilts inside me too, Veronica left me. I think the man Sam is working with and Veronica’s lover are the same.” I told her tenderly, wanting to do something for the poor soul.
I got down and pretend nothing happened, keeping a dead look. With a clenched jaw, I was waiting with an extreme headache until that demonic soul came to meet me with a disgusting smirk. Seeing him made me want to hit him for doing this to an innocent girl.
“I heard you came to talk to me.” Sam spoke devilishly, stopping before me. Rising from the seat, I continued to glare at him, barely controlling myself to not punch him.
“Take back the case.” I demeaned seriously.
“No. That’s not possible.” He chuckled darkly, not caring about anything.
I growled, “Why are you doing this?”
But my words refused to reach him, he had gone beyond recovery, he had become a soulless creature. When his hand didn’t tremble to hurt his lover then anything else was another matter.
“I am not obliged to answer. Plus, why do you care? Are you still in love with Saafia, hmm?” He smirked and that made my jaw clenched.
“I still have humanity in me which sadly people like you don’t.” I hissed but my words had no effect. He had no concern about anything.
“Hmph.”
“I guess it’s meaningless to talk to you, isn't it?” I hissed, inhaling sharply to keep my emotions at bay and ignore him.
“Exactly.” He enunciated.
“I expected no less from an animal like you.”
“Aw, the fact I touched Saafia is bothering you?”
He failed to grasp where I taunted and took it wrongly. I only glared outrageously at him for being unbothered after becoming a devil and left furiously with a determination of helping Jacey at least.
Then I would be relieved that not only I shattered a life, I would at least save one too.
